I am sure this has been brought up multiple times, but does anyone know what the "Coast Guard Blue" is that is stated in the uniform manual. Is this the same color dye that we use on our ODUs? I am trying to modify a USN pea coat to USCG standards. Thank you, I know I probably missed it somewhere.

The color hs a code, look on the label in your SDBs. Used to read color 3362 ??? or other. One of the names mentioned was insignia blue.

The Navy blue of a pea coat is set into the kersey material. You'll most likely end up blowing $135+ for the pea coat.

The Coast Guard REEFER, the CG peacoat, was made of a different material form the Navy, you might still find some sizes on eBay.

Could have sworn one of the announcements concerning uniforme that have been posted here mentioned the CG developing a "new" winter overcoat. Seems like this was supposed to be the time to introduce it. Maybe a note to HQ ????

PO Killian:

With the winter wx hitting real soon, I understand why you'd need a more heavyweight winter dress coat up there in ME. Big Grin

Save your self the trouble about trying to convert a current Navy/pre 1976 CG one though, they are darker and it won't work trying to die it to the lighter CG blue shade.

Google the phone number for Dee Bees Tailor Shop at ISC Alameda (aka "Gus"), they still sell Reefers in CG Blue from existing stock w/ the correct buttons and will ship.

Respectfully,
Surface Force

How much is Dee's charging? I ended up getting a new old stock CG Reefer from Col. Bubbee's. They are a huge Army/Navy surplus store in Texas if I remember correctly. I had ordered it on-line for about $40-$50. They have only very limited sizes though.

They asked for $60 and it was brand new, sitting in their store room.

I still have my grandpa's pea coat from when he was in the CG in WWII. You think I could still wear it in todays CG uniform?(not a serious question) It's probably the same style as the navy's since they both had the same type of uniforms

No.

Actually, it's not clear that that the reefer is till even an authorized uniform item any more.

Noticed in some past photos of the last inauguration that the Honor Guard was wearing the longer bridge coat. Do they still have a source of supply ??

Not sure if the Pea coat is the reefer or bridge coat....

If they are, ALCOAST 056/08, Uniform Board 42 results is the applicable ref, and states the Bridge Coat is optional for E-7 and above.

What the heck is a boat cloak? (Not getting a mental picture from the description in the manual) I also missed the point where it would be a wardroom only deal, not that it looks like something an enlisted guy might wear....

Mightyz,

The "reefer" was peacoat length, with three buttons narmally buttoned . The "bridge coat" was knee length with four buttons up the front and a half belt on the back.

It was nice to have it re-authorized for CPOs, seeing that under the "old" uniform it was the CPO and "O" overcoat.

I recall getting a reefer, after making Warrant, and freezing ones tookus off on winter q deck watches in Boston, 1980.

courtesy of 1110 Surface Force, the boat cloak.

BOSN:

I'd gather that the one displayed in the picture you reference was procured many yrs ago as organizational clothing for the CG Honor Guard which now gets passed down on an "as required" basis.

The only source of supply for bridgecoats in the current bus driver blue color was the CG Academy...that is before they, in their indefinate wisdom, stopped issuing them in 2005 to the cadets in favor of the new ski parka (and thus let the contract run out). Roll Eyes

Respectfully,
Surface Force

Wasn't there an ALCOAST or something that designated the trenchcoat as the "all-hands" coat for ceremonial and like wear?
