In the new Medals and Awards manual being updated this past May (08) I looked through and noticed that there are some Unit level awards that were given at my previous units after I left and are not in my PDR. I have a few questions:
1. What is proper etiquette for requesting the personnel roster and award write-up from old ship mates? I have contacted a handful of them who seem to blow it off with the thought that I am just hunting for more chest candy. 2. What if I can't get the write up and/or personnel roster but am still entitled to it? My yeoman has told me that if I was stationed at the unit for fifty percent or more of the time the award covers (Unit level) then I should be entitled to it. But I have to have the paperwork. This makes it difficult if you were left off the personnel list and have to rely on old shipmates to get it. 3. Why is there no list in the Medals and Awards manual for the Team UC's with dates and units?I'll answer that myself to a certain degree to spark some conversation- There are just too many given out all the time to be able to record them all in one place. That makes them both less recognizable for merit and often the catch-all instead of the issuance of individual awards when that is indeed what is deserved in its place. This further complicates trying to track them down for your own record. If there is no recording of them in the manual when that is the go-to place for both the MUC and CGUC then you are left with few options. I'm sure the argument will be made that they aren't worth the effort since they're not worth points. And that they are hand-outs, etc. But there were some things I am proud of doing in the Coast Guard for which they were given. Have at it what you will. This message has been edited. I'm in a similar situation and a friend was too. he wrote and requested his awards be reviewed. They pulled his service record, updated his record and sent him the awards.

I had a Navy MUC show up twice in my Direct Access, each a year apart ('96 and '97). I knew one was for OPN Uphold Democracy in '94, but thought the other one was for OPN Desert Shield/Storm. I had the citation and units list from Haiti, but not from Saudi. It took me until 2002 to track down the citation and units roster from the CNO Office listing the PSUs under "Task Group 151.9"
I was involved in Tall Ships '03 from both a planning phase and during the event. I was not included on the local list for a SOS ribbon. A letter to my boss outlining my activities was then endorsed by the boss and forwarded to LANTAREA, resulting in my reception an SOS ribbon. It can be done. |

Interesting recent award of the Coast Guard MTC ribbon in the Tidewater area. I did not realize that a listed Coast Guard military unit commendation can now even be presented to civilian personnel not connected in any way to the Coast Guard ( active, reserve, auxiliary, CG civilian employees).
Provides a good chuckle. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Mastersmate, |

Well, one part of the answer is no "unit" gets a Team award. That is part of the definition. |

Phil,
Is that like to receive a Humanitarian Service Medal you are supposed to have "hands on" participation? Not sure if it still says that.. but it certainly should be removed if it is still there. Wray.. |
