Hubby is getting ready to go to CPOA in a couple months and he needs new ribbons anyway so I'm trying to help out. I have a couple questions I haven't found the answers to and he's not sure of. I've gone through UltraThin and set it all up, I just want to double check a couple things. On the CG 'E' ribbon, does it get an actual metal E on it? The ribbons get large stars and the mini medals get the small ones, right? (UltraThin automatically put the large ones on, but I thought I read they got the small ones.) He's got 6 or 7 years of Sea Service so he should have one bronze star on that ribbon? On UltraThin's site they have the Pistol and Rifle Expert ribbons with a yellow E on them, will it come that way? He thinks I need to add the 'E'. Thanks so much. jess
The sea service ribbon: with 6 years sea time, 1 small bronze star. 7 years sea time, 2 small bronze stars. (1 year= ribbon. add three years to that for each bronze star).
As for the Pistol and Rifle ribbons, if he earned expert, you need to tell them expert. Because people earn a one of the three catagories. marksman, Sharpshoot(S), and Expert(E).
Ultra thin is a great company in my experience with them. they are very fast, and know what they are doing. I personally love the magnetic back option on the ribbons they make.
First of all, to make this alot easier for you, have him go into direct access and print out his medals and awards page. As stated above the E ribbion doesn't have an "E" on it. However if he has more than one E ribbon, each additional award would be represented by a large gold star. Ultra Thin has two different ribons listed for the rifle and pistol. The marksmanship one will be listed as such. The expert will be listed as a seperate one and that one is the one you choose. The "E" will already be on the ribbon.
Thank you. He has printed out his list from Direct Access, as I said I have it saved at UltraThin. But, it seems when I did different 'ribbon checkers' to double check the order they are all different so I wanted to be sure on these few things. (Like none of the others have the Pistol/Rifle ribbon with an E already on them) Don't want to spend $100+ and have it be wrong, right? Thanks again. Now I just have to double check how much sea time he has.
Don't mind me butting in, Which star denotes a second award for the following ribbons USCG Meritorius Unit Comm Special Ops Svc I see many sizes and colors on ultra thin, I thought it was the large gold star but it dosen't look right? Thanks! -Jeff

Merit Unit Com is large gold star for each additional award. Large silver star for a fifth. Also don't forget the Operational Distinguishing Device if it applies to your award.
Unsure about the Special Ops Svc, that I had that poster that has everything on it but looks like I misplaced it. Try the Awards or Uniform Manual.
Cuttercoasty is right the MUC gets the 5/16 gold star and the Spec ops gets the small bronze star. Correct me if I'm wrong jafo3, but I think that the large silver star represents the sixth award. I'm fairly certain that the ribbon represents one and four stars would make five. Just trying to help.
Ooh, that was the question I came up with last night (thanks for reminding me!). UltraThin has a large bronze star and a small bronze star to choose from, but in the Uniform Regs it just mentions one, a 3/16th I believe. So we use large gold ones and the small bronze? And all small stars on the mini-medals? Thanks again.
Certain CG medals and ribbons use the 5/16th gold star (5/16th silver for sixth award) for awards such as CG Unit/Team commendations, Achievement/Commendation Medals, etc. A silver Operational "O" might also be included on these.
Others, such as National Defense, Good Conduct, campaign medals, etc, use a 3/16th bronze star (3/16th silver for sixth award).
Mini-medals have half-size devices on them (1/8th gold and silver stars, 1/8th bronze and silver stars, half size "O"'s, "M"'s, bronze numerals, hour glasses, etc.)
Usually those items are found at larger Exchanges, unless you order them on-line.
Don't feel alone, many don't know this, or fail to use the proper terms... From what I have been told the Academy teaches this in the first day or so...

You are right, thanks for the catch! Just a case of typing too fast for my thinking if you know what I mean.
Thanks for the help everyone, and also the operational device reminder, I just looked at my order and had forgotten to add it. Here's a question for you, in what type of situation would a MUC be awarded without the operational device? I can't seem to imagine a scenario in which that would apply, unless maybe it was something like a ships crew volentering time on some carribean island rebuilding a school during a mid-patrol break or something? But in reality isn't that still "operational" Second question that crossed my mind, suppose a member is awarded a MUC with "O" and a MUC w/o the operational device, are two of the same ribbons worn, one with and one without the device? Anyone know what the turnaround time is for ultra-thin, not that it really matters I'm just redoing a shadowbox. -Jeff

I believe the operational device would apply to units such as cutters, stations, ants, msst, etc. Units that would not be included as operational would be TRACENs, HQ, FINCEN, etc. I'm not looking at manual for this just making an educated guess. I recieved an LOC when I was a boot camp instructor and the operational distinguishing device was NOT authorized. Now I have a total of 3 LOCs and wear one ribbon with an "O" and 2 gold stars. I ordered a set of large medals and the ribbons, recieved them in about 7-10 days by USPS. Hope this helps.
