I would like to know how the Coxswain's chest device came into being and what the symbols represent (Oars, curling waves, compass rose, etc.) Where can I view an image of it that is official and detailed?

The Coxswain Insignia was authorized in early 1972. BMC Tom McAdams of the 13th District Motor Lifeboat School was presented with the first insignia in April 1972.

It came about to provide a visual qualification insignia for CG boat coxswains who had completed the appropriate sections in the CG 313 boat crew qualification manual.

The US Navy at the same time frame was instituting breast insignia, rather than the sew on distinguishing marks, for their short lived transition to a new style uniform. The CG was also going to adopt a new style uniform, and the USCG followed the USN lead as far as insignia. A small boat coxswain insignia had recently been approved for the PBR operators and other riverine boat operators in the USN.

The breaking wave, symbolic of boat operations in adverse sea conditions, the crossed oars from the lifesaving branch of the 1915 Coast Guard. The compass rose for the coxswains responsibility for safe navigation of the boat.

There may be newer symbolism associated with the insignia by todays CG. But from the best of recollection, that is what was passed on when the thing first arrived.

I earned my Coxswain Insignia in June 1972.

Thak you for responding with good information on the Coxswain device. I have been asked to carve a replica of it with some personalization and I wanted to know what each part means. Is there a rope in the water of the wave, or is that a wake?. In the end I suppose such detail isn't that important, but I wanted to know since I will spend a good deal of time on it and want it to be right out of respect for the BM2 who will be receiving it.
