I was just wondering if it has ever been brought up to switch to a normal crew cut undershit for the trops instead of the v-neck. I now have to wear trops 4 days a week at my office, and for us guys that have a little chest hair have to shave the top of our chest or we will have chest hairs waiving at everyone. I personally would like a crew cut shirt instead. Has this ever been submitted to the uniform review board because I have thought about doing it.

About 20 years ago the Uniform Board decided it was tired of seeing grimy crew neck t-shirts. That's why we now wear v-necks.

WTH, submit the request up the chain. Roll Eyes

Nothing says you have to shave your chest.

Yeah, I know I don't have to, I personally just don't think it looks very good waving at people with your chest hairs. I don't care to know who does and who doesn't have a hairy chest.

Are you kidding? Asking Coasties to police themselves with the chest hair thing? I do not want to name names but some people are all over the road when it comes to shaving that chest hair. Officers included --> underway of course.

You know what, I was just sayin, I personally don't think it looks very professional. I'd say maybe at most 1/2 the people actually shave. I was tought that the military has a "clean cut" appearance, having your chest hair waving doesn't count as "clean cut" in my opinion. The one thing I do not like about the CG is that very very few people take pride in the uniform and come in with a sharp military look every day. We are professionals and we should dress like we are.

There is no requirement to shave your chest hair, what a foolish topic.

If you want to "Solve" this "problem" lets do away with Trops and require SDB's when not in the ODU.

Swabbie - welcome to the forums. Please review the User Agreement aka the TOS about responding to posts and remember to respond to the message and not the messenger.

V-neck Tee shirts have been and I suspect will be, around for a long time. Some people have chest hair, some don't. If you have a lot, do like everyone I've known - shave your neck down to your collar - and don't sweat the small stuff.

IRISH - the SBD was a Navy Dive Bomber in WWII ; I'd like one too! Pat Flynn would be the first to admit to a typographical error. What he means, as you know, is SDB for Service Dress Blues. IRISH - pointing out a typo on a discussion board is sort of like riding a motorcycle without a helmet; its wrong to do but it feels good...

Wow, thats a good "lead by example" quote there sir. I am surprise that an officer in the CG would use that language to answer a simple question.

The first cutter i was ever on was the sherman a 378 at the time i was a non-rate.

we had a Maa check us for t-shirts as we line up for chow thur the passageways..anyhow..i remember to this day..this big guy..well big to me..i was probably a buckthirdy at the time ..with a t-shirt cut out he pulled out of his back pocket and slipped over his head..just before the Maa came over..sorta slick Big Grin..i believe he was a mk.

personally i believe the crew necks were more in keeping with a military apperience..but thats just me.

Coolsc

In the Marines we wore real t-shirts. We also had base laundries that got them clean without destroying them. The truly squared-away, sea-duty and barracks details wore theirs backwards to stiffen the neck even more (after removing the tag). As close as I can tell the Coast Guard is the only service wearing v-necks. Being a mere auxie, I usually fake it and don't wear any in warm weather. Wear long sleeves and a tie when it's cold. People often confuse us with mailmen but the dogs don't chase us. Big Grin

Even thoguh i dont have a jungle of hair grabbing at people, i think crew necks just look a lot better. I mean for some people wearing v necks looks like there not wearing an undershirt at all. As far as them being dingy. Isnt that what inspections are for? Violin

Personally, I think the crew neck would look better, though to tell you the truth I've seen some folks with hair sticking out of the top of those too...

If you are hairy... you can wear a chain around your neck (regulation of course) and that will tell you where to stop shaving. If you can't see the chain under your shirt then you'll have a great guide for where to stop. BTW, I only bother shaving the top for trop inspections, not that I'm overy hairy! Roll Eyes
