Why can't the CG take a big step and introduce all new uniforms? The Navy has basically done that. When it came to the ODU, the most logical step would have been; take an existing old or new version of the BDU worn by the USMC, USA and color it blue. Done, no need to field test, with serveral companies fighting for the bid to produce them. How about we just get rid of the Air Force uniforms all together, I'm sure there are different color options availible. IMO the best looking uniform being worn today is the USCG Band dress uniform. Give everyone that it's already field tested and in production, plus it's a CG uniform.....duh.

The Commandant of the US Coast Guard was in town last week and had the new ODU on when he talked to CG Corpus Christi. Looks good. He said shorts were comeing too. And we may have at a pull over shirt for Hot areas. All good stuff. As a CGAux now but was in the Marines, I think it will be a very good uniform.

By the way the Commandant was 1st Class. He took questions from all ranks for almost a hour.
The CG is in good hands. Beer

WhisperToday we had folks from the UDC and Program Manager for the ODUs visit Sector San Juan. The Warrant had the first prototype uniform on. They stated that the shirt will be more tapered, this would avoid the maternity look. They also talked about the CG logo will not be on the sleeves. Velcro will remain on the blouse, but will not be on the pants. The pants will have an elastic band on the side pockets. This will ensure they don’t sag as the current ones do. They also mentioned a possible official Polo shirt. The ODU shorts will not be the cutoffs of the regular ODUs, they will be made or bought from sources that provide such pants. Just to give all a current status.

Any idea when we will see the new uniforms? I have to replace my worn ones, but don't want to buy four more and then have the new ones come out shortly there after!

do a search of this topic and you'll find all kinds of info. Also, not to sound like we don't want to answer you but where have you been, this has been pretty well advertised and all the CMC's can give you a rough date.

Also, go to UDC's webpage and they'll tell you how this is going to happen...when it does. You get a uniform allowance so you should already be replacing your worn uniforms.

You won't be getting 4 free ones like last time. This uniform will be phased in while the other stock is drawn down.

Unless you might have gotten a "good deal," wasn't the cost of the ODUs deducted from the member's monthly uniform allowance?

A pull-over collered shirt might not be a bad idea for certain situations. It would look a lot more professional than a sweaty ODU blouse when doing rec boardings in hot weather fro instance.
While I wouldn't want one as a mandatory sea bag item, having it as an optional or organizational item would be reasonable to me.

No, you are 100% incorrect. The money intended to regularly replace your Work and Undress Uniforms was cut out of the uniform allownace, since you did not need to replace them any more and the amount to replace the ODUs was not figured in again until a point when they should have reached their 'shelf life.'

Even if your assumption was correct, they were still free! The uniform ALLOWANCE is just that. It is tax free, meant to spent on uniforms and is not 'income.' This is a matter of law, established more than two centuries ago. Enlisted military personnel have their uniforms provided for them in kind or cash. This included maint, which is defined as replacing worn out uniforms, not laundry!

The UDC is having a 2 for 1 sale right now on certain sizes of thew ODU. The MCPOCG came our station last week wearing it. Looks pretty good. He said they should be out around Sep-Oct.

I just dont like the three CG emblems on the new tunic. I think that the one on the pocket would suffice without the ones on the sleeves.

It's not the new ODU the UDC is having a 2 for 1 sale. It's the current ODU; to get rid of current stock and make room for the new ODU.

Actually, I would like to see the Auxiliary utilize this (ie. polo shirts, khakis). There needs to be a differential between the Auxiliary and the Active Duty/Reserves. Not only would this alleviate confusion from the public who can't differentiate the two, it would weed out the wannabee's. Smile

What in the world is wrong with the ones we have?

I am still wearing 2 of the 4 uniforms we were given. 2 still in the box. So we tuck them in, who the heck cares?

All this other crap is for the birds (tuck/untuck, velcro, which is the newest belt we can wear etc)

Why in the world do we blouse our pants? That is about the dumbest idea I have evr seen. That to me is the only thing we need to change.
Some people tuck them in their boots, some blouse nice, some blouse so short their friggin socks show when they sit down.
In my opinion, this should be our biggest concern.

Our present uniform is fine, just no blousing!!!! NO NEED

Maybe it's just the fact that I've been blousing my uniform trousers for over 18 years, but not blousing them, in my mind, looks "sloppy".

We, the Coast Guard, have only been blousing for 2-3ish years. To me it looks foolish

I also concur. I think when properly done the blousing looks sharp and professional. I use the spring blousing straps. I have never had a problem with them creeping up my legs nor coming un-done. They are very cheap. I have been using the same set for the past couple of years.

Also on another topic of the uniform. I know this has been mentioned before, but the biggest problem with the uniform is the fading. Fix, I die mine with Navy Blue Rit dye every three to four months. The new name tapes and collar devices do not dye when you do this. This keeps that professional appearance and also saves you from buying new uniforms every year.

How many uniforms can you dye with one box?
