Mickey, The new ODU's are on the fast track - like the NSC, 123's and the UAV's - the check is in the mail. The new ODU's have been designed, beta tested and modeled by the senior brass - any decade now you should be authorized to purchase them. However, when that happens, a note will be posted on the UDC website stating they do not stock them and you will be redirected to the supplier, once on the ODU supplier's website you will be directed back to UDC's site.
I posted this on the Boatswainsmate forum, but wanted to share my thoughts over here for all of my shipmates to see.
Just imagine if they did a survey with all enlisted personell in the CG, I bet 85-95%% would go with the second row of pokets and a little more length. That would look more military. I thought that was the whole idea. I simply do not understand how that version is what they are going with, I am completely baffeled.
Now the above topic is almost unaminous, but one that is more of a debate is this one. I know alot of "old schoolers" and maybe even the majority of the CG would like to see the ballcaps stay, but I would love to see the 5 point covers. Most shipmates I talk to do say they would never want them and they like the ballcaps.
My whole take on this is this: As we all know the CG is changing more and more, it is becoming more military like and our image is slowly becoming more and more portrayed as such in the media. This is great, we are the protectors of our hime land, and we need to have a more serious image. I strongly believe that the second row of pockets and a Marine Corps style 5 point cover would help us maintain a more serious military image.
These are my opinions, and I know, some of you may be thinking "what does this young gun know", I may be wrong thinking this would be a better image for us, and I invite you to chime in and share your point of view, because I'm sure there are valid reasons for why the CG doesn't go this route.
So what do you guys think, agree, disagree. Mayeb this should be moved to the uniform forum, and I'm sorry for such a long tangient,,I truly feel strong about the uniform I so proudly wear everyday and I am a big believer in looking sharp
disclaimer Not looking for a heated debate or trouble, I just wanted to express my opinions on this topic that I feel so strongly about...djc.
I kind of wonder if this set is going to come out like the last set did.
Everyone had to place a size order. Then a few weeks later, it showed up in a box specifically for you. Blouses, tshirts, pants, name tags and blousing bands... Had truck loads lined up for the 378 I was on at the time.
I like the 5 pts too but they have been voted out by the uniform board. I have more selfish reasons though. I have a little head and the "one size all ball" caps should say one size fits all but Will.

LMFAO, I know what your saying, I am not a Flex-fit person either. They just do not look right on me. Luckily our exchange sells both styles and I wear the adjustable. They can last well over a year without fading or loosing shape, I have washed it in the dishwasher many times and it is still perfect. The flexfits fade, they loose shape and crinkle up after one washing, they suck, but thats a big IMO, as I seem to notice the majority of guys I know actually like the Flex-fits better..
Oh no, you don't understand. I have to take nail clippers and clip some of the tab off of the adjustables to get them to fit without that extra bit hanging out. Bill is too large, and crown too high. I can spin a flex fit around in a circle on the top of this noggin. LOL
We have to buy ours either way. We don't get one issued. In the past a new member would be given one. I would say its up to your command, but we have guys who went to a shop and ordered a custom one made cover picking one of their choice and custom embroidery matching everyone elses covers (as long as its layed out exactly the same I think this would be ok). Most commands want everyone to look uniform and all have the same cover, so I would say it depends on what they say.
I dont like the flex fit either. My head isnt exactly small, but, when I put the flexfit cover on, it hides my entire head like I didnt have any hair at all. The crew just recently put in an order for new custom unit t-shirts and new covers, and when I put on that new flex fit cover, its like putting on a vice grip on my head. I just threw that one in the garbage. one size fits all my rear! Just keep wearing the older one till I transfer in a few months.
The Comdt and the MCPO-CG were yesturday and said that the new uniforms will be avaiable at the UDC in june 2008 they are also coming out with a new hot weather uniform which contains shorts and a blue polo like shirt. so it should all be pretty interesting here in the next few months

Actually - yours is paid for by the CG. You just have to procure it yourself, but you buy it with money the CG gives you specifically to buy it. It is called a uniform allowance.
MC I believe that some people may be thinking that the new ODU will be issued to the Enlisted workforce like the last one was, as I understand it you will be able to buy the new ODU but for those already in the field there will be no free issue (bulk issue).
Hey cuttercoasty where does the crew wear those custom unit t-shirts?

Mr F; Hopefully folks like you and I can clearly point out to them that in the end, it is really the same process. With the original ODU, the enlisted workforce was issued the uniform in bulk, but will not have it figured in to the maintainance allowance until the 'shelf life' has passed. With the new one, the uniforms will be replaced as older ones are not serviceable, through the maint allowance, which will cover the member's expense. So in essence, as with all other enlisted uniforms, it is a free issue. The member just has the responsibility to identify which uniforms of their's are past serviceable life and replace those.
I have issued this challange before: Gather up all of your uniform replacement expenses over the last 12 months and compare that cost to your uniform allowance. Anyone who takes reasonable care, will find that they profited!

MC, absolutely. I should of thought that one out better before I posted that.

Honestly, I dont know. I bought one, and dont wear it. A size medium this company produces was like putting on a size x-small. just like their flex fit hats were smaller then advertised. If the guys do wear them, they wear them under their blouse, and we dont take our blouses off for any reason but to change into dry suits.
Your right about the uniform allowance Master Chief, I haven't had to replace an odu since they were issued to us. I bought a bunch of buttons when they became available and replace them when needed. I also send them to the cleaners instead of washing them and that has kept fading from becoming an issue.
The biggest expense I have had in the last few years was replacing my drees coat, and since I didn't realize that buying a regular fit instead of an athletic cut was going to be so dramatic, (it was like a tent) I had it altered.
For that matter, I still have, and wear the original dress shoes I got in boot camp. We got two sets and I wore one set out.
Comparing uniform life spans is like comparing apples to oranges. For some desk jobs, ODU's will last forever. But some cutter commands make thier guys wear ODUs all the time, no coveralls underway or anything. So those uniforms go a lot faster.
