I am looking for a new pair of boots and I cant find anything that meets my requirements: steel toe, zipper side and capped toe. I uses to wear Rocky Mountian boots but they stop making the type I wore. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks |

Danner's are FABULOUS. A little pricey, but well worth it

Converse makes a zipper side, steel toe. Fells like you are wearing a tennis shoe, very light. They sell them in Gall's for around $100.

I don't want Danners they are more of a Winter boot I had a pair in Alaska now i going to FL. I looked into a a pair of Corcorans $$$$ to much. Boats' I found those Converse boot I think I am going to try those. How are they in the Florida Heat? Are you on a boat or at a Station?

Yes Danner's make a winter boot, but don't get them confused with their whole shoe line. I wear a pair that look just like the Matterhorns and are Goretex, much lighter. The Converse as mentioned above are also very nice boots. It all depends on the environment and work conditions you will be using them in, as with any other boot. There are also the Oakley's, which do not last as long as many boots, but are very comfortable.

Actually they are very cool in the FL heat. I'm on a 210' and we routinely head down to the FL straits, Mona Pass, Windward, and JIATF-S. I also used them when I was at STA Islamorada in the FL Keys. They were much more comfortable than the boat crew shoes they issued. |

Depending on what duty you're doing I didn't think you were allowed to wear steel toed boots. Something about losing all your toes if something heavy enough hits the steel.
The exchange here carries Bates, they've got a safety toe (somehow safer than steel toes) zip sides and they're water proof and insulated. |

Sorry I mis-spoke about the Converse being steel toe. It is actually that composite safety toe.

If something hits your steel toe boots hard enough to crush your toes, they will be gone no mater what you wear. The requirement is ANSI Z41. These can be steel or composite. Safety toe only means it has something between you and the falling mass of crushing buoy rock. Not all safety toe boots meet ANSI Z41. The ones at the exchange should, but check. The only time you cannot wear steel toe is under some conditions working with electricity. |

Brett - isn't ANSI Z41-1999 specific to electrical safety as well as protective toe? If the boot meets the requirement of the uniform manual, it should be good for any electrical situations too, right? |

I have a pair of the Converse that aren't steel toe, they are electrically safe. The wife got them for me from Gall's.
BTW, the Mythbusters busted the myth about steel toe shoes. |

Thats What I meant to say, composite safety toe. What about when you are at a Station that wears the summer short blues (Shorts, T-shirt, LE Gear and PFD) what type of footwear do you wear then? Because I am current on my way to a Station on Florida's Gulf Coast.

Ever hear of the UNIFORM REGULATIONS? hint: it's available on-line. |

Actually you won't find the type of shoe for boat crew in the uniform regulations. It's in the Rescue and Survival Manual. G_REG721: Your unit will issue you a boat crew bag with all required PPE (shoes/boots, sunglasses, organizational clothing, etc.) Where in FL are you headed and as what? (non-rate, BM, MK?) |

I see the R&S Manaul I didn't know that was in there. I have played QM for the Pasted 2 years on a 110. I am a BM3 heading to STA Cortez. I have always wanted a Station but I don't know what to expect? IE. I know how a cutter works but I have no clue how a station works! I hope to learn.

I did not think there was a rating of Quartermaster in the CG for the last 5 years ??? Thought the rating was Boatswains Mate, that worked on deck and in the pilothouse. |

The bridge was the domain of the QuarterMaster. On smaller Cutters, other rates would be trained to stand QMOW watches.
Of topic. MastersMate, when and where did you go to boot camp. I seem to remember a Lewis in my company, Papa 86, fall of '72. But I don't remember first name. |

Almost 7 years before that date, was a QM1 by then.
They eliminated the Quartermaster & Boatswains Mate ratings back about 5 years ago and created a new seamanship based rating with the old name, Boatswains Mate. Since then it seems to be an on-going pizzing contest between these folks as to what their rating really entails. The old ratings don't exist anymore. But it does make for humorous reading to watch them go at it. This message has been edited. Last edited by: MastersMate, |
