Ok...So my wife decided she wants me to wear the Dinner Dress Blue (COMDTINST M1020.6E - 3.B.2)for an upcoming wedding...I am pretty certain I have the answers but since this is the first time I have worn this uniform I would like clarification to the following questions:

1. Is the gold cummerbund for E-6 and below as well??? I have read the entire uniform manual and it only states gold however I have seen some E-6 and below wear scarlet cummerbunds.

2. What color is the sleeve insignia and service stripes...3.D.2.b states scarlet for E-6 and below and gold for E-7 and above...Is this correct even though 3.B.2 states a gold cummerbund??? I have also seen some E-6 and below wearing gold sleeve insignia's and it doesnt really make sense to wear scarlet since we are wearing a gold cummerbund...

(before you start bashing me on the obvious answers to the questions above please read number 3)

3. Since UDC doesnt carry items for the DDB where do you purchase them...I spoke with an individual at Vanguard and they only have the gold Navy insignia's and service stripes for the DDB...Do we wear the Navy sleeve insignia???

Thank you for your time and responses...

As to what junior enlisted wear, I'm useless... but I bought my DDB's from the US Navy exchange website, to include the USCG shield (right sleeve), and rank insignia. Explain what you need, and there isn't a problem. They told me that it (rank, etc) had to be made special - but I received my shipment in about 10 days.

The shoulder rank set me back over $50. It is quite costy...

I talked with the Uniform Shop at Naval Station Bremerton and they were clueless as to how I would get/order a CG rating insignia for the DDB...I will try the 1-800 number on the website tomorrow...

Junior, just use the USN rating paches for your uniform, red stripes for E6 and below. Remember that the USN authorized gold for 12plus years of good conduct so that's why you have seen them. If the NEX doesn't have what you need, then call Vangard.

Also for the CG Shield for the right sleeve you should be able to get that through the CG Academy uniform shop, or Vangard.

Be careful on the navy patches, not all of them are a direct cross over to the CG. Vanguard can custom make them, does take about 15 days however. Also, be sure to order new buttons and chain clasp, as the ones that come with it are navy specific. And yes, it is a gold cumberbund.

Junior,
This may be a stupid question...you do realize to wear DDB with a cummerbund means you have to buy the whole new uniform to include the short tux type jacket and pants and pleated shirt. What you may me thinking of is the alternate DDB which is your normal SBD with white shirt, mini medals and NO cover. Not sure about the white gloves, however I'm sure it's in the uniform regs. If you do buy the DDB uniform, you do buy it from the Navy or the tailor at Petaluma is very adept at putting that uniform together as a lot of the Cheif's Academy students buy it and all the instructors have to buy it.
Hope that helps,
HSC

Thank you for all the responses...

3Flys,

I am aware of the short tux and pleated shirt w/ cummerbund...I have already purchased the entire uniform (minus rating insignia) from the Navy exchange...Thank you for making sure I wasnt confused...

Are you aware that it is not at your wifes discresion but rather the happy couples? I'd check with the couple being married, as to how they prefuer their guests to dress. Many couples prefer(even if it is a member of the service who's being married) that their guests not wear a dress military uniform, as to not take away attention from the couple being married. Just something to consider! -Jeff

Just wanted to make sure. At least you can save it for when you make Chief and wear it at the Academy dinner! Smile

You still might give the Petaluma Tailor a call if you're still having trouble.

Recently, my son's friend got married, and he wanted me to wear my DDB's at his wedding.

I didn't.

When I showed up in a suit, and he saw me, he asked why I didn't.

I told him I didn't want to steal his thunder.

Him: Young buck, Navy E-3, black cumberbund, two medals.

Me: Old fart, CG W3, gold cumberbund, 13 medals, two insignias.

I wanted his brides' and their guests' eyes totally on the young couple.

Regarding Vanguard: stay on them, if you order from them.

I ordered the CG INV specialty on black melton for my DDB, but for some reason, it got put on the shelf (for months) and was not mailed to me until I called them and asked about it (on a Thursday before needing to wear my DDB on the following Saturday).

At least they got my order out overnight and I was able to get the items on my DDB before the military dress ball on Saturday night.

Just to calrify, are E-9's and below allowed to wear the Gold Cumberland? Im actually planning to get married next year, and was contemplating on wearing my reg dress blues, or go with the DDB's.
