I have only seen it worn underway, outside of the port.

We wore them with our six-color "chocolate chip" BDU's in Saudi and Bahrain during GW I.

I was either that or Kevlar pot.

I had one in desert camo for OIF. I preferred my six point cap over the the boonie cap. I think that I might have worn mine once... I have never seen one in CG Blue.

We traded our DCU boonies while onboard a Canadian frigate and then bought the six pointers once we got back to the ASU.

I have a navy blue one with our badge on the front of it that I occassionally wear during patrols. Would've been nice to have during those long freighter boardings in the Carib/EASTPAC.

I'm pretty sure the blue ones we wore in the Marine Div for CBP would match the CG uniforms. We bought them from our uniform company. Many of us wore them all the time out on the boats.

We had boonies in CG blue at the MSST. They are all over the place.

Maybe someone can answer this: I haven't found anything in writing anywhere that says anything about rank insignia on the boonie. The current regs manual doesn't say. Anyone?

When the original message came out authorizing the boonie (the one from the UDC with a specific NSN), it also addressed the manner in which rank insignia was to be affixed. To save you a few moments, use the ODU sew on centered in front.

I'd like to add a bit of info to this discussion and ask a question.

I'm an Auxie, and we are authorized to purchase a Tilley Hat that has US Coast Guard Auxiliary embroidered on it for use with our ODUs (for those who haven't encountered these great hats just do a google search). Wear is at the discretion of whatever coxswain we are crewing with, and of course its preferred that either everyone have them or everyone just wears the ballcap cover. Insignia are sewn on or pin on is allowed in lieu of sew on if sew on not available. These are great hats - I know it sounds like I work for Tilly but I don't - they have a map/utility pocket in the crown, brass eyelets for ventilation, snaps to adjust the brim, chin strap string, washable, and SPF rating due to brim size in addition to lifetime guarantee.

Now for the questions. I suppose the Tilley hat is not an option for Active and Reserve? What about the reverse - is the Active/Reserve boonie available for Aux purchase and use? I might have missed it but I don't recall seeing it on the UDC website. Inquring minds want to know... Smile

In D11n you can get an appropriately embroidered boonie hat at CG Island, Alameda, in the tailor shop. The tillie hat is rather thick for really hot weather, it's easier to emulate the CG Station boat guys and wear nothing when underway.

Where can you get a reasonably-priced (that means just about anything but Tilley) blue boonie cap online?

The "protocal" is outlined in the uniform Regulations manual.

Pretty simple, huh?

Wray.... Cool

The problem is that while the boonie was authorized (on a VERY limited basis) by the Results of Uniform Board No. 41 ALCOAST 011/07 dated 09Jan07, it was left out of the Uniform Regulations of COMDTINST M1020.6F dated Feb09.

The discussion paragraph of the Uniform Regulations states that "This Manual is written in the permissive form; meaning this Manual describes uniforms and items that are authorized for wear and the manner of wearing. It is neither intended nor possible to describe the wide variety of clothing and pseudo uniforms that are not authorized, although some prohibitions are included to clarify understanding. No deviation from the guidance of this Manual is authorized." So therefore, if the boonie is not mentioned in this COMDTINST Manual that supersedes the ALCOAST, is the boonie no longer authorized? To my knowledge, no clarifing message traffic or notes have been released by HQ.

Correct. Whether or not HQ meant to leave it out is above your paygrade. (But it SHOULD BE ADDRESSED by others).
