I was explaining to my parents a few days ago that after I take my initial PT test the first week of classes, if (when) I pass I'll sign my contract and swear in with the three year scholarship.
One of the questions they had for me was if I would receive dog tags along with all of my uniform and equipment after contracting and I had no idea what the answer to that would be. Anyone know the answer?? I kind of figured that until I needed them, dog tags wouldn't be issued, but correct information is better to have than an assumption.

This is one of those things that I believe varies between various ROTC detachments. At my school, cadets did not get issued dog tags until they got orders sending them to training off post.

Personally, I never got issued dog tags. I always purchased them on my own. I found getting them through regular channels a bureaucratic pain. There are a number of outlets to get them which are dirt cheap and dont involve reams of paperwork, travelling across the state, etc.
