Hello, I recently have been in contact with one of the Commanders of ROTC at UC Berkeley. I never found out about ROTC until last year as a Sophomore in college, explaining why I'm getting such a late start.
I'm currently a junior at a school that DOES NOT have ROTC, but the Commander said that it would not be a problem and he would be able to take me. Furthermore, I not only would NOT have to go to LTC, but would be able to start as early as next week to start teaching me Drill and Ceremony, etc.
I'm going to be honest and say that I'm not sure if I really would like to do this, so I expressed these feelings to him and he told me about having to sign a "Conditional Contract". Could anybody tell me exactly what this is? He said he could keep me on that contract for up to a whole year, but after that I would have to make a decision. While I trust the Captain, I do not want to get myself into anything binding me to military duty when I'm not really sure if I want to go the whole 9 yards.
I appreciate ANY feedback at all. Oh, and I have no prior military experience (including no JROTC).

The information is as it was given to you. You have to make the decision to follow through. I urge you to take some time with your father and talk it out. Call your recruiter, too, and put him on the phone with your dad. Weigh the options and the different paths you'd like to take for your future. I'm sure the right conclusion will surface. Say a prayer over your decision if you like, but don't be hasty. Inform the recruiter with brevity be happy with that decision. Semper Fi!!!
i wouldn't really talk to a recruiter.most of them are over exaggerated. some of my friends were talking about the recruiters talking about military being a nice experience, all these bonuses coming in, the whole shebang. but they said it was completely the opposite. i would recommend u talk to one of the students that are in the program. i did, so it like talking to someone with honest experience. they are not trying to recruit u on the spot.
There are a bunch of different routes one can travel the ROTC path. Im not exactly sure what you are doing as I dont think youve given us the whole story. There are routes through ROTC that will let you take the classes for a year or so and quit with no obligation.
I concur with CarlosRamirez about the recruiter thing. Its not that recruiters will necessarily lie to you. But they have an agenda which likely conflicts with yours. Chances are a recruiter will angle you towards enlistment.
