Gentlemen: I am a coin collector and a former Marine. I know, I know..
About 10 years ago I acquired a nice silver coin from the 297 Military Intelligence Company Special Operations. I have been looking for information for several years. I believe this unit was disbanded after Viet Nam but I really don't know. Can anyone give me some background on the unit and or the coin?

Thanks.
Terry

He said 297th MI Company not battalion.

The Center of Military History has nothing on a 297th MI Company, but here's what it has to say about the 297th MI Bn.

quote:
Constituted 21 November 1962 in the Army Reserve as the 297th Army Security Agency Company

Activated 1 March 1963 at Atlanta, Georgia

Reorganized and redesignated 15 April 1966 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 297th Army Security Agency Battalion

Inactivated 31 January 1968 at Atlanta, Georgia

Redesignated 1 February 1990 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 297th Military Intelligence Battalion; concurrently withdrawn from the Army Reserve and allotted to the Regular Army

Redesignated 17 October 1991 as Headquarters, Headquarters and Service Company, 297th Military Intelligence Battalion, and activated at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated)

The only Campaign Participation it lists is for Iraq, so it doesn't look like they were in Vietnam.

Thanks for the info. The coin says company. I have scaned the coin and would be willing to send the picture to anyone who is interested. I don't believe I can attach an image here.

Hi Terry. The 297th MI Company (ABN)(CEWI)(SF Gp) was an Army Reserve intelligence company that was inactiviated in 1990. It was the intel company of the 19th Special Forces Group. I served in the 297th for several years and have coin number 55.
