Who do I have to talk to / email to get Russian as my language at DLI?
Prior service with 4 years active, 4 years IRR. Originally was a 31F (now 25F).
Contract has me going to Fort Jackson, SC for 2 weeks then to DLI for 52 weeks. I called DLI and they said I have no modifier to my MOS (right now it reads as a 35W1L00YY).
I got screwed around the first time in the Army, and I'd rather control my direction this time. I know the dates Russian classes are starting at DLI, but unfortunately it looks like Army is taking maybe one slot per class.
Who do I need to talk to? What do I need to do? I'd like to get Czech, Belorussian, Russian, Serbian/Croatian(wouldn't be too bad), Thai, or Ukrainian.
Russian and Serbo-Cro are considered LCTL (Less commonly taught language) and they usually save those classes for FAO MI officers who are getting orders to target countries. I'd like to say that if your DLAB is 111 or greater getting anything but a CAT 4 (Arabic, Chinese, Korean) is nearly impossible.
All that being said it's in the hands of the quota manager at DLI and his hands are controlled by the needs of the Army.
The Army has more Russian linguists than it needs. If you're looking for Russian, don't expect to get promoted. A few years ago the Army told the Russian linguists "Relanguage or reclass". There wasn't any advancement for Russian linguists unless they were in a special program
