sbird you are thinking about Ground Surveillance Radar (GSR) - there were the AN/PPS-15 and An/PPS-5

The PPS-15 is the smaller man-packed radar set...a lightweight, coherent doppler, very short range combat surveillance radar (1500 m for personnel, 3000 m for vehicle).

The PPS-5 Ground Surveillance Radar Set is a lightweight, man-portable (but typically transported by vehicle), ground-to-ground surveillance radar set used by the infantry and tank battalions. The radar detects/locates moving personnel at ranges of 6km and vehicles at ranges of 10km, day or night. The radar has a maximum range of 10,000 meters. There were remote sensors stuck in the ground as well.

The AN/PPS-5 GSR is an old system around since the Vietnam War using 1950's technology. Since the late 1980's (my era), soldiers were complaining about the need for a new radar system....I am so old school and assume there is better technology out there.
