Hi, I have posted a question on the recruiting section, but was wondering if anyone here has any personal experiences with the army linguist program.

I haven't taken any tests yet or anything, but am considering it and would love to hear the experience of anyone who has done this job or who knows someone who has.

Thanks.

There is not linguist program. We don't deal with linguistics in the Army; we deal with languages. I'm a language analyst, not a linguist.

It's a great job if one gets the right language. I like it a lot, and I wouldn't trade it for any other enlisted MOS in the Army, with the possible exception of one with better post-military career prospects, like electronic warfare equipment repair or UAV operator.

SeekingKnowledge, what specifically would you like to know? I've been in the job 18 years.

So you analyze the language? I think someone got to you while in DLI... you're a linguist...

My husband, a 35N, is also planning on taking a language. He scored a 122 on the Dlab and is thinking about taking Mandarin Chinese after he re-enlists. Anyone else have any experiences that they can share? As a military wife I want to be with my hubby as much as possible and don't quite know where he'd be stationed or what to expect.

Well, I would point out to you that as a 35N, your husband's language won't matter very much. It's a 'nice thing to have' if he were to get stationed somewhere that has a Chinese mission, and often they try to do that, but 35Ns aren't assigned on the basis of languages. Most 35N slots are non-language coded. Hopefully he will get an opportunity to work with his language; but I have seen Hebrew-language 35Ns assigned to units in Korea; and nowadays, everyone's pretty much getting to deploy at one time or another.
