I have been getting a couple of conflicting reports about the status of dependents during the Monterey stage and AIT. Will I be able to live with my family off base from the beginning of Monterey or will I not be able to do that for several weeks or months? What about during AIT? Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the answers radiospook. I had another question about the early living situation at DLI.
My BCT is scheduled to end sometime in the first couple weeks of November and my wife is due with our first child November 26. I was wondering how lenient the Army would be with me regarding my situation.
Will they let me leave training during the day if my wife happens to go into labor?
Will I be allowed any kind of leave time for this?
Is it possible to move in with my wife a little early or even skip living on base for the 2 weeks in order to be with my wife to drive her to the hospital in case she happens to go into labor at night? Or, would I at least be allowed to have my cell phone available for her to let me know I need to come and drive her to the hospital?

Thanks for any insight anyone may have.
The first two weeks you will be here you will be in the intake company. It's meant to be the bridge between BCT and DLI. You do all your in-processing and that sort of thing. The atmosphere is not anywhere near as intense as BCT (no drill sergeants). However, it is not as relaxed as regular DLI. (You still cannot wear civvies and such.) So, the answer to your question can only be answered by whomever your command will be when you get here. I'm sure you will get some leeway when it comes to your situation but I doubt you will get any leave time. You may be lucky enough to have time between when your two weeks is up in the intake company (and then you move to your regular company) and when your class starts. If that is the case, you may be allowed to take leave. But when class starts, you will get no leave. Class is paramount to everything at DLI.
Thanks again for the info this is incredibly helpful. One more question that is on my mind is when does the 2 weeks first phase start?
My orders say I will be at DEFLANG in Monterey November 19. I am assuming based on my ship date of August 24 and my BCT start date of Sep 4 that BCT will be over at least a week before the Nov 19 start date. Does the two weeks start the 19th or right when I get to Monterey?
Also, during Thanksgiving and Christmas will I be required to take leave time or do they have something I can do at least part of the time class is not meeting?
HD, You're two weeks will likely begin as soon as you are here, but I caution you against trying to figure it all out exactly. The bottom line is that you will be transferred from the intake company to your normal company whenever the cadre get all the requirements out of the way (in-processing briefings and such) and when they see fit. Some people I know were in it closer to 3 weeks, I was only in it 10 days.
Oh yeah, Thanksgiving and Christmas. You will definitely NOT be required to take leave. You will be on "casual" status if you are here over those holidays. Generally that means doing PT in the morning every duty day and then you are somtimes assigned to a duty for the duty day (such as raising and lowering the flag) or sometimes released to your company to do whatever they want you to do. I stayed for the first week of Christmas break last year. Doing PT at 0600 while everyone else is on break sucks, but then we had formation at 0800 and then I was released to my company which meant we checked in with out NCOIC and he said go home. Had to be back at 1200 or 1300 (can't remember) for another formation and that was it for the day. One day I did volunteer for flag duty which meant I didn't do PT that day, but did have to raise the flag at 0700 and be back to take it down at 1700.
