I hope that this is the best place to post this, if not let me know. Just FYI I am still a Cadet.

A 1LT that I know that is currently deployed to Afghanistan has been sending out updates on his current status through Google groups. The information that he was initially sending was fairly dry and really was only status updates (i.e. arrived in country, ect.)

His last two updates have gone into more detail and I'm afraid that some of the information that he sent out violates OPSEC. Some of the information sent out includes number of troops at FOB, weapons systems, types of units, length of patrols, ect. Is this violating OPSEC (I'm pretty sure I know the answer)? If it is what should I do about it (I realize that its too late to do anything about the information that he has already sent out but should I send him an email telling him that he needs to check his information and read the OPSEC briefs again)?

Immediate response would be greatly appreciated.

You should either contact your chain of command or your local CI office or security manager with the details of what you have. If you are not sure where that is and want to keep some distance, contact 1-800-call-spy and they will help.

This kind of information could be very damaging if someone were planning an attack and he filled in the last missing pieces. Even if not, it gives others more information on our tactics, techniques and procedures etc.

You can also contact me through my profile and I can help put you in contact with someone if need be. Are you deployed or CONUS?

I'm an ROTC cadet. I took the email to our BN XO (who is also our OPSEC officer). He sent the LT an email reminding him what he should and shouldn't be sending out. I think this should be enough to correct the situation.
