I am a FN assigned to the USCGC THUNDERBAY out of rockland ME. I am trying to get qualled at my unit so my CO will put me on the A school list. Another FN at my unit also wants to be an AST he is almost qualled. The other day he recieved an email from the ASTC saying that he was not currently medically qualled because he is a Category 2 dental case instead of Cat 1 he gave a call to arlington VA to see if he could get any info but they told him they would call him with some info. Im on leave and I was wondering if you guys had some info on what a CAT 2 DENTAL is and how to become a CAT 1 if possible so I can help him out and calm him down a little bit ( :

Thanks, FN Santos

I'm kinda wondering what the dental requirements for being an AST are as well. Does anyone know if it matters if you have silver or white fillings? I'm asking this, because I know that the military is picky about details.

A category 2 dental means that there is works that needs to get done. A filling or crown. So tell your friend to get his butt back to dental.

As for the filling question (Silver or White)does not matter. Hope this helps.

Don't delay in getting yourself back to the dental clinic. If you're using a Coast Guard clinic, you should be fine. If you're using a sister service or other clinic, it can be confusing to the providers as to what the Coast Guard demands for dental (or medical) standards. The Air Force, for example, has different requirements for aircrew candidates than we do and, depending upon the doc or dentist, may not be up-to-speed with USCG standards. In any case, don't give up. Get yourself qualified, gain experience at what you're doing, and keep your eye on the list so that you always know where you stand. I applaud your effort in getting qualified underway for whatever watchstanding post you have on the T-Bay. You will gain maturity that will make your Airman Program time easier to bear. I do not like having boot camp graduates show up in the Airman Program --- they don't know what goes on out in the fleet.
