Have read and heard some conflicting info. Also was told that after boot you must wait two months before putting your name on the list regardless of rank (eg coming in as E-3) so command could get to know you and give you some kind of approval you need to put your name on the list. Is it true that you must wait a mandatory 2 months once you get to your first duty assignment? Whats the wait time looking like right now for AST-A school?

The wait is four months at your first unit regardless of rank and must be E-3 to put your name on any list. That is with your CO recommendation (which is really on you and your performance when you arrive.. ie. getting qualified, attitude etc.) Then you'll need qualifying ASVAB, Security Clearance, Flight Physical. Thats basically the short and sweet version. This is all in COMDTINST as well if that makes it easier/less confusing. Thats where I read the information.
Hope it helped you a little more. |

You do not need to be a E3 to put your name on any A School list, You can be a E2. Look at some of the list and you will see E2's on there.

Chpater 2 page 6 on. 4 month wait if your an E-2, none if your an E-3 BUT commanding officer can make you wait longer or insist you meet certain criteria first. I believe regardless of rank your gonna have to be at your first unit at least 4 months before they send you off to the Airman program. |

Is AST a critical rate at the moment? And if it is does that mean that mandatory 4 month wait can be waived?

AST is not a critical rate only FS,EM,ET, and AET are. If you want to go a critical rate the four month wait can be waived, just talk to your supervisor or your YN's. Regardless of your rank you wait 4 months to be on an A school list, and yes you can be an E-2 on the school list, i was.

From personal experience...the four months at your first unit is needed. You learn so much in your time at your first unit that will be helpful when you do get your name on the list. A lot of rookie mistakes are made at your first unit. Better to get them out of the way and get a good bit of learning done before you leave to actually pursue your rate. I wouldn't sweat the wait too much. It goes by fast and the AST A-school list is a quick moving one.

And what personal experience would that be? |

I think the kid may be a student in another Aviation A school - lighten up Dogshow.

Really, was I that hard on him? If he is that sensitive it's best he go another rate. |

Is there no room for the fun loving sharing adventurous hippies in the AST rate?

Umm ...No. Two points though. The guy (jtmays) IS going another rating. It wasn't about being hard on him, it was about you sounding like one of those "only the annointed shall discuss matters about my job" types. again I say, lighten up. |

Every once in a while it is nice to stop by and see everyone playing nice as usual.
A word of advice concerning the AN program, don't give any unless you know what you are talking about. |

Roter, did someone cut the kids fingers off, or is this just your maternal side coming out? The question was not for you not directed at you. And your assumption about what I "sounded" like was a perception devised in your head actually very very far from reality. If you really need to need to know, because protecting the defenseless little guy seems to be really high on priorty list right now. Which I must say is an extremely courageous and bold move from a postion of anonymity. But back to the point I challenged the work in progress because I totally disagreed with the "needed" four months at your first unit. This is from a kid whom's whole career do far has included boot camp, a unit, AN program, and possibly E-city. WTF does he know about how useful the information or the experience he had in four months and how applicable it is to the fleet. If one can come on Freds Place and make such a claim, I do not think it's the end of the world if someone challenges them on that. I mean I do not want to get crazy, and ask for some supporting arguments to put some validity to the post of an E-3 and his career experience. And those were my thoughts, but instead of laying into him, which you now have magically made happen by butting in. I simply asked him to support his arguments. Again but you saw where that question was going. You saw that he was not going to be able answer my question to validate his points. So like some the rescuer you are, you tried to save him. |

Rotorhed, if you are so knowledgable I'm surprised you aren't aware of the fact that enlisted personnel do not have a "rank". dmazur- Apparently you suffer from the same lack of knowledge regarding rate, rating and rank that afflicts rotorhed. |

Your right, I did get riled up there. And it was easy for you to do. I apologize if I was offensive. I wish you well, and may good things, the best things come your way. I mean that will all sincerity. |
