Try scrolling down a bit to the discussion titled "workout". That should build up your index finger strength a bit.....

For now, Just go out and have fun. Play Sports, go hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, surfing. Whatever is physical and you like. with the exception of one thing.
Go swimming. Get nice and comfy in the water.
I am not trying to dodge your question. I am trying to give you good advice. If you start training specifically for Swimmer school now, you will be so burnt out by the time you get there, you will have blown your wad well before graduation.
So, Do something fun. Water Polo has a lot of the fundamentals of being a rescue swimmer. Former Water Polo players seem to do better than anyone. At least that has been my observation.
But if you start training now. you have 4-6 months of training at an Air Station, then 4 months at school. That's already is a 3/4 of a year of balls to the wall training.
The airman program is there to prepare you. do not put the cart before the horse.
It's hard to teach, without having you onsight.
Just stay out of trouble, stay active, and if you really want to study to prepare. Get some books that will aid you mentally. there is a book called train tough the army way. And Evander Holyfields Autobiography are some good books that focus on what a winner must have in his mind.
I promise you, that preparing yourself to be able to preform under extreme stress will go ten thousand times farther than a workout program.
Working out is mindless. if you do it, you will get stronger. Not Quitting.... now, That takes an extremely strong mind. And that my friend is generally the deciding factor on who becomes a rescue swimmer and who does not.

True that Chief. Dog Show has his nose on everything around here. Hell I bet he has no life outside of being an AST! Kidding Dog Show. He is what makes transition easier for people in the fleet. Willing to educate, give out smart information, he is a good teacher. Loves to share his knowledge. Unfortunatly not everyone out there feels the same need to go above and beyond for others. (I didnt say everyone so careful) "leadership isn't about being the best, or the highest ranking, but about being the one who can accept the most responsibilty"
