I received an e-mail from Martha LaGuardia, author of "So Others May Live", that mentions the premiere airing of "Rescue Swimmers" on the Weather Channel on Sunday, February 24, 2008. Check your local listings for times. And for you old timers out there,(i'm one of them...) Jeff Tunks' rescue ("So Others May Live") will be one of the featured stories.

Help get the word out... Beer

Well, I'd watch it for sure, but I'll be in Basic when it airs, probably being yelled at for being an idiot. Curse

i'm sure someone in your family can tape it for you...and you don't have to worry about being called an idiot at basic training; its a kinder, gentler coast guard now. you'll be referred to as "mentally challenged"... Big Grin

good luck!

And for some reason the only people that make it to the fleet from Cape May, are the mentally challenged.

Yeah, hopefully someone will remember to record it, but that's no guarantee. C'est la vie.

"Mentally challenged," I like that. A lot better than "fudge-packing retard." Big Grin

That's a good point. Actually, my sister mentioned to one of her first grade students that I'm going into the Coast Guard, and that I jump out of airplanes, and the little brat says, "He's stupid." Point taken.

I guess I am an idiot, but that's never been news to me. If I wasn't, I would never have jumped from an aircraft, and I sure as heck wouldn't have jumped 25 more times. Only reason I haven't done more and gone for my B license is money. The relative stupidity of the action has no bearing on any downtime from jumping. So I guess I fit the bill.

It'll be interesting to see it. We did our documentary back in 1997/98, when few people knew what 'rescue swimmers' were. Because of that, it got a lot of attention from NBC who promoted the premiere in THEIR news. Now with the Guardian, I get emails all the time from people wanting to be rescue swimmers (guess there are a lot of morons out there, eh?) It's definitely one of our best selling DVDs...along with our Eagle DVD.

The producer of the Weather Channel program wanted to buy some of our footage but in the end we never came to an agreement on price.

I'll make sure we make a note of the airing in a future Coast Guard Channel Newsletter.

Mr. free fall, All jokes aside. Your joing a great service. And seeking a great job. I would wish you luck. But luck is for people whom do not believe in hardwork, or playing the lotto. I wish you athleteic skill of olympiv proposrtiom.s the heart of a warrior, And only ignorance wish I upon is not knowing how to quit.

I was a professional Mauy thai Kickboxer before the CG. WE had a saying....When in doubt, Handds up, Chin down and go forward!.

Luck is great to have, but luck don't last forever. No way I'm going to rely solely on luck. It will play its part, but no more than that.

I like that saying from your martial arts days. How true. Very good way of thinking.

Anyway, thanks for the words of wisdom, and I'll see about someone recording this program while I'm in Basic. One week remaining.

Do we know what time on the 24th this documentary is airing? I can't seem to find it on my channel guide, but I could just be having a stroke, or maybe my brain doesn't work as well as I thought.

TELEVISION

'Rescue Swimmers' piece to air Feb. 24 on Weather Channel

The Weather Channel will air a Coast Guard rescue swimmer documentary at 9 p.m. on Feb. 24 using footage filmed in Elizabeth City last summer. The series is called, "When Weather Makes History" and the title of the episode is "Rescue Swimmers."

It also might be at 6 PM, I do not know if this is eastern or western time, but the actual Show its on is called When Weather Makes History. Also, at 11:30 AM PST, the weather channel shows Coast Guard Stories, might want to check that out too. This morning was Hurricane Rita, after Katrina, and what the Air Station Louisiana did during that storm.

this is to MrFreefall383, are you in the Coast Guard or joining? I read that you are going to Basic. Since you are calling yourself MrFreefall I thought maybe you were already a swimmer. I was looking for clarification on this.
