Hello,
I am joining the Coast Guard when I graduate this year in June, after talking to my recruiter quite a bit and also talking to relatives who are/have been in the Coast Guard I have decided that I want to be an AST. I work out quite a bit but probably not enough. I also have my Billy Mitchell Award (Civil Air Patrol thing) and that means I will go in as an E-3. According to my recruiter that means I will only have to be at my duty station for 4 months before applying for "A" school. I have had a flight physical before (while in CAP) But I was wondering about the Security Clearance. I was told that if I didn't have a police record and I did not have any credit card debt I should be fine, any personal experiences? Also about the Airman Program, how does it work? Like when you sign up for A school do they then send you to the Airman program? Or do you go to it before you apply for your school? What is it like being a AST/what is training like? (Not just A school but getting into the Airman Program-Becoming a AST) I bought Gerald Hoover's book and I am currently reading it. (Very good book by the way "TheCreeker") Thank you for your imput, Daniel |

If scouting through the threads is a bit confusing, don't stress out too much. Your recruiter should be able to give you a timeline for the Airman Program, etc.. You might be able to get a flight physical at Cape May. Security clearance is simple: answer all the questions truthfully. Having debt (in and of itself) will not disqualify you -- but -- neglecting to pay your debts and/or forgetting to list your overdue payments will put you on the radar in a bad way with the Security Center folks. Spending a little time aboard a vessel or at a boat station prior to the Airman Program will help you understand USCG missions and procedures and will make you appreciate aviation duty.
