Hey everyone,
My name is Skylar and I am 18, I have been working with a recruiter and getting things sorted out. I have my GED and scored a 52 on my practice ASVAB so I know I will be good when I take one but the big problem I have is that I am 20 lbs overweight, I am 5' 8" and 240, I was taped and measured, and when he entered it into the computer my body fat percent is close than weight to height requirements. I have been told all I need to lose is 20lbs. I have passed the 1-1-1 and just need to lose the weight before I can go. Can someone tell me some great ways to lose weight quickly but in somewhat good detail. This will really help me a lot and I am hoping to get out of here as asap. Thanks ahead. |

First, there is no such thing as quick weight removal without doing some things of dubious legality and possibly harmful to your health.
Now to your situation. First, look at what you are eating. If you are eating a lot of greasy fried foods, like Whoppers, Big Macs, etc., shift to other things like salads, grilled chicken, etc. Ditch the sodas. If you have to, drink diet sodas in moderation. Cut out sugar in coffee, tea, and iced tea. Also, if you are sneaking beer, etc., stop. I know that you're not supposed to, but kids have been sneaking things they shouldn't since Adam and Eve had kids. What is your exercise program? You need to make sure you have both a strength training and cardio component. Seeing as you are joining the military you better do some running for the cardio. Dress sensibly for PT. Rubber suits are dangerous, and the weight removal is transient at best. See if the recruiter can work with you so long as you show good faith progress. I am a little curious about one thing. I'm 6'1". I would be a candidate for the Fat Boy/Fat Girl program if I weighed 220 lbs. unless I passed the tape test. Who are you testing for? |

Again, right on, Boats ~
I am close to 6'4". I too would be a candidate for the fat rendering platoon if i weighed 220#, given my height and build. My ideal weight is still 180#, same as my 18-22 year old years. Strip naked. Face a mirror. Jump up and down. If anything jiggles (except for the male package or on females, the whatchamallits), you have a ways to go. break, break Quick is "dumb". Give yourself time to re-mine your personal best way. It's all about good and better lifestyle choices. Obviously, you were minded to slobby in your formative years. What or where do you want to get to "as soon as possible"? At your age, a senior in HS, i had my own apartment and a good job.... Currently, i am a 60 year old wonder ..no docs, no meds. Be careful. Don't mis-mind yourself in quick fixes. This message has been edited. Last edited by: SemperSignsdotcom, |

Fast weight loss isn't safe. If you want to lose weight the healthy way, try drinking a gallon of water slowly over the course of day and gradually work yourself up to running 3-4 miles 4-5 times a week.
Be careful, jumping into a physical training regimen that you are not ready for can be harmful, and drinking too much water can lead to hyperhydrosis. |

Hmmm...
A gallon of water a day? Geesh! Whose idea is that? I know that 1/2 a gallon a day shouldn't have negative effects in the body ..but, a gallon? Too much of anything is bad. Too much water will wash out the good stuff you want to keep. |

What's fast weight loss?
The average body consumes about 2,000 calories per day without excercise There are 3500 calories in a pound If you change your diet to all veggies, fruits and grains - and reduce caloric intake to 1500 calories per day, you'll lose a lb per week If you excercise to lose 300 to 500 calories per day, you'll lose 1/2 to 1 pound per week. As you lose weight, you can start increasing your caloric intake - avoid the yo-yo- you don't want to regain everything you sacrificed to lose. By the time you've dropped that 20 or 30 lbs, you'll feel great and will have started a life style change that will keep you fit and hearty for the rest of your life. |

I hate running. For me it's fast walking, bicycling, mountain trail / cross country walking-climbing and swimming. "Find your edge, then dance on it." Exercise has a good cumulative effect in the body. Find exercises you like. Make them a regular practice. This message has been edited. Last edited by: SemperSignsdotcom, |

I was in your shoes about 2 months ago or so, 24lbs overweight...Made tape about 2 weeks ago and made weight as of this morning..MEPS for me next week!!! I have an amazing recruter, I was allowed to do PT with the future soldiers though I am 31. (A HUGE help, I learned a TON and it was awsome motivation) So, If there is any way you can be involved in that, jump on it.
But what it comes down to, when I'm not trying to catch the 17 year olds...Is exactly what they told me. Hate running or no (and I do) for me it's a part of the PT test, and so it's a focus of mine, at least 45 min a day except on the days where I test my run times, about once a week. I was a runner to start with, so for me, runing 6-7 days a week wasn't an issue. If you aren't..Don't do that. You'll hurt yourself. Switch it up with riding a bike, or whatever cardio you like, but keep it at least 45 min a day. Learn to like wieights, push ups and crunches too, I like to do them every time I have to go potty, working up to the number I need to do my test. DON'T drop your calories below 1500. You WILL get dizzy and sick (trust me, I tried it). Read labels on everything, make sure you are getting all your food groups, your body needs them all to be truly healthy. Water is your friend, we are something like 75% water after all. The biggest thing is this. There are no quick tricks that will work for this. You aren't trying to fit in your wedding dress for 1 day and then putting the weight right back on. It's a HUGE commitment to lifestyle change, period. Contracts run from 2-6 years for the Army (where I'm headed) and making weight an PT tests don't go away that whole time. Take advantage of the time you have before you can sign to adjust yourself to a whole new way of life. In an odd way, people like you and me are lucky...If I were to have made weight from jump I'd have been a world of hurt! Skinny doesn't mean in shape after all. Aside from bieng in the best shape of my life at this point, I've learned about eating right, what hungry feels like as opposed to craving, and a ton of stuff individual to my body that will (I hope) help me through basic. Apologys for the text wall, along with a huge thanks to all the people at my recruiting station who taught me all this and helped me to my goal! |
