I'm trying to eat better, but have one bad habit, I have to drink a cup of coffee in the morning. I've tried to kick the habit, but am so drained by afternoon, what can I drink in the morning to give me the same boost.

First, I'd have to say that you need to make sure you always get a good nights sleep. At least 7 or 8 hours.

Secondly, I've seen some health reports and also heard that a cup of coffee once or twice a day is not a bad thing. Half a dozen or a dozen cups might not be good for you.
Surf the net for the pro's & con's of a cup of coffee and decide if you want to quit.

Whatever your choice, good luck.

I quit cigarettes.

Then I quit booze.

I have no intentions on quitting coffee, ever.

I'm not a Doctor or a coffee drinker so take this for what it is worth......

If you feel drained in the afternoon it really means one of the following:

1. The rest of your diet is high in sugar.
2. Your not getting enough exercise.
3. Your meals do not have the proper nutrition or your eating too much for lunch.
4. Your overweight.

Or a combination of all of the above. In my experience a lot of people drink coffee to cover one of the above points 1-4.

If you want a substitute, Coke has some caffine or if you really want to jump into caffine heaven....Mountain Dew. Both are high in sugar and corn syrup which is not good for you either and they are bad substitutes.

So try this.....

Skip the morning coffee. For lunch just have a salad (without bread) or go to a Chineese place and order a vegitarian dish with unsweetened iced tea to drink. I think tea has some caffine but not sure there.

Anyways, do that harmless experiment and see what happens that afternoon. If you don't feel as drained then what you normally eat for lunch is partially to blame and your probably not eating right.

I would also encourage exercise but you can move into that later after trying the above.

I myself am a coffee lover and drinlk it tons! But before BCT, I plan and have been told to gradualy get away from it here are some tips.

1. Reduce the amount to just one cup for one week and try to take one day off in that week without any source of caffiene

2. Then the next week go to drinking tea, black tea.

3. then the next week move to drinking green tea, because its real good for you and tastes good (ex: I love Celestial Seasonings Mandrain Orange Green Tea)

Plus, as always like everyone else stated enough sleep and DONT switch to pop/soda/coke (whatever you wish to call it) it is 10x worse than coffee in general.

P.S. with this reducing steps...if you temptation kicks in you can have 1-2 cups of coffee a week!
Good luck (same goes for me trying to break...but it tastes so good...BUT so does green tea!)

Hopes this help.

Why anyone would WANT to kick coffee is beyond me....I love the taste of the stuff. I don't 'need' it for the caffeine kick...I'm ADD, I just like the taste. Big Grin

C'mon now. What do you go to kick the Chocolate habit threads and tempt them as well?

Seriously though, I just think it is strange people drink coffee for the energy boost or to stay awake. It's really not something I would use as a drug and I have done without it for decades, without having energy problems.

I see overweight people at work though guzzle the stuff. I don't think they are drinking it for enjoyment. I think they are using coffee to mask symptoms of a larger dietary problem.

I go to lunch with people on diets for example and they order these huge salads loaded with high calorie garnishments. Then lament about how difficult it is to lose weight. The small sustainable changes in eating habits are what are the most effective NOT the dramatic swings.

You hit that nail right on the head. I dont drink coffee and work out twice a week and box twice a week (well I dont box anymore I just hit the bags which I set up in garage) but either way in good shape.
My "drug" is chocolate. I eat it once a week but recently my neice was selling it for her school I bought a 50 bars and ate them over course of 10 DAYS. I never felt so sluggish so tired in my life.
No more left heehee but wont do that again EVER. Next time will give them away.

Do you drink enough water ? Ofcourse that has nothing to do with being tired but my sister just had kidney stones and her doctor told her caffeine drinkers truly need to drink lots water.
I think everyone needs to drink 1 gallon a day (could be wrong) but with caffeine drinkers its important.

if you eat right and excersie....the body has it's own natural stimulates in it. Caffine causes a rush which later leaves you down and needing another fix. As for water everyone (coffee drinker or not) needs some. Here's the formula:
your total body wgt divided in half=the number of ounces of water per day

Caffeine does cause a rush but it can give you a great 45 minute workout esp if you dont take it other days. I dont take it but have in past.
I had no idea I needed that much water (I weigh 225) .
I drink a gallon a day perhaps bit more since moved to Miami and its warm.
Thats a lot of water with work, etc might be to much but thanks for the info appreciate it.
Going to drink bit more . I only workout with weights 2 days a week so not like losing a lot of water and I hit the heavy bag and speed bag twice a week in garage with fan on.
I think those will be the days when I increase water consumption as those are my 'thirsty" days lol
Thanks again

I simply switched to black tea. It has more caffeine and if full of antioxidants, which are supposed to help prevent cancer and boost the immune system!

Well, are you trying to cut out coffee period? Or just the caffiene?

I can't stand not having coffee either, so when the doc said I have to cut back on caffiene, here's what I did.

I slolwy weaned myself off of regular and switched to decaf. My body adjusted to it slowly, instead of cold turkey, which stinks!

Here's how you do it. For the first week, just put 1/4 decaf grounds and 3/4 regular ground to a pot/cup. (however much you usually make.. the gradual switch/ratio is whats important.)
Next week put 1/2 decaf to 1/2 regular.
The week after that, 1/4 regular to 3/4 decaf and so forth.

It worked for me. I drink a cup of regular now, and I get the shakes.

If you're weighing in at 225----drinking half of your weight in water can cause your body to become imbalanced---thusly causing a flushing your body can't handle. It can be deadly in fact.
There are reports out now that say that the '8X8' isn't the formula for everyone. Most important thing you can do is listen to your body....if you're thirsty---drink a glass of water. Even your coffee or tea counts towards your water intake of the day.
Your body's always been pretty reliable about telling you what it does---and does not---need. It's an incredible and complex machine....just listen to it. Wink

PS: you can get a pot for AIT if you'd like. Husband went out and bought one and a new cup for the next 5 months. Wink

I don't drink pop, coffee really doesn't give me any boost, my blood pressure is borderline pre-hypertension and thought it may bring it down a little if I quit. Coffee is my only bad habit, I only drink a cup a day, but if it's good for me I'll keep drinking it.
