The figure sounds about right for the Air Force and Army. Since you want to gain, pay a visit to your doctor, tell them what you are trying to do, and in turn they should be able to refer you to a professional that will assist you in getting to where you want to be. |

your main problem is your not consistent with your daily intake of calories. Don't say you are either because I know your not, otherwise you would gain weight. My advice, invest into a protein supplement. Muscle Milk is pricey but delicious, have a serving everyday. There are also good proteins with a good amount of calories like Real Gains, Serious Mass, Cytogainer, etc. Also, make a calorie goal for yourself everyday, whether it be 2000 calories, or 3000 calories I'd suggest to start at 2000 daily and go from there. Keep in mind you must be in great physical shape, so lift weights to build muscle, work on your pushups, pullups, situps, and long distance running. This will make gaining weight harder BUT will not hinder it completely if you keep your calorie intake consistent each day. Don't think I'm talking out of my butt either, because at one point I was 5'10 and 105lbs, I'm currently 6' and 170lbs, its very very possible to achieve. |

That's a pretty bold statement and proves you know little about nutrition. Inconsistent calorie intake would cause rapid fluctuation in weight in either direction. Being a person who can eat and eat and has a hard time gaining weight is simply a person who has a higher metabolism. What you are pointing out is that his calorie intake is not consistently high enough to counter balance what his Resting Metabolism burns and what he also burns in a day working out. First off how long do you have till you ship to Boot? Your best bet in gaining mass is getting on Weight Gainer. You can get GNC's Pro Performance Weight Gainer 2200 Gold off of their site for $41.99. Nutrition is a numbers game. Eat more calories you gain weight, eat less and you lose weight. However do not just consume empty calories like soda and candy. Fill your body with calories it can use to replenish your nutrient stores after a workout. Eat a lot of natural protein and a lot of carbs. The protein will help in muscle building and recovery and the carbs are used as fuel during workouts. Practice eating 6 times a day and eating a lot. It will take some time getting use to. 2,000 or even 3,000 calories is not enough, go higher. I'm at 2,000 calories by 9am. start at 4,000 to 5,000 calories a day. Like it or not you will have to start working out if you haven't been before or all those calories will just turn to fat and do you no good. Get on a good weight lifting program and start building muscle. I suggest if you have time is to build the muscle and get up to about 140 first then start running. You will undoubtedly lose weight running. You will have to train your muscles and lungs to run fast with the added weight. No sense in slowing down your weight gain by running when you'll have to adjust to a higher weight in the end anyway. Have patience in your workout program. StillThinking neglected to mention how long it takes to jump 65lbs. An increase like that takes months not weeks so don't get discouraged. I know how you feel, I can eat 2 large pizzas and lose weight. Good luck and PM if you have anymore questions. |

I think you didn't understand what I meant by being inconsistent. I meant one day he may take in 5000 calories, and the next day he may only get 2000 calories. Basically without him knowing he's doing a hybrid of intermmitent fasting. When a person eats different amounts of calories each day and if they are quite different like I assume they are it actually burns more fat to eat this way then to eat 3000k each day being consistent. (Even though you stated you'd fluctuate in weight back and forth which is entirely false especially for a teenager with a metabolism like him) Why? You are giving your body a higher metabolic rate on the "high calorie" day and your body dooesn't have the time to adjust on the "low calorie" day...So you burn more fat on the low day because of it. You suggest to eat 4000 to 5000 starting off? Thats so much over his maintainence level its crazy. That would put so much unecessary stress on his body and add more fat then muscle. Were not trying to turn him into a fat powerlifter or a bodybuilding going into off season here. He wants to gain some weight, I suggest he starts eating 2000-2500 cals a day, once he stops gaining weight with that amount he can increase up to 3000. On a personal note I gained 70lbs in 7 months my senior year of highschool, BUT my bodyfat went from 10% - 20% and it was not very healthy at all (donuts, sugars, so much fat) The key was consistent calorie intake day in day out though, just eat better foods than I did lol. Feel free to PM me as well if you wish, I have no issues with helping others out on this subject. |

Ok I am seeing where you were going but we need to clarify before we start slugging it out lol. Building muscle and gaining weight can be done in very different techniques and in more than one way. As we agree on the overall picture, getting there is what we do not. I suggested 4,000-5,000 calories a day forgetting to mention that this will be his loading phase that way he has something to work off of. I think you will agree that it is easier turning fat into muscle if it is there to fuel the recovery. From a wrestlers stand point, being inconsistent with your calorie intake trains your body to be more efficient in holding onto the calories because it adapts and doesn't know when it will feed again. Makes it harder to lose those calories but if he cranks his calorie intake up fast his body will be more willing to burn them off faster, hence eating increases your metabolism. It's hard to shed .5 pound on a 500 calorie diet. His calorie increase will also be directly dependent on how intense his workouts are. The more intense the workout the more calories you will need. What you suggest does make sense now that you've said more but my way will also work. So it is up to him what he wants to do. Your personal note proves how different we train. My freshman year I weighed 174lbs with 32% body fat and my bench max was 95lbs. I left after 4 years of wrestling and powerlifting weighing 136lbs 3.9% bodyfat and benching 280lbs for a max. Now that I do not have to cut weight anymore I have maintained 5.5% bodyfat and now weighing 169lbs. I did all my gaining in strength with natural protein like tuna, baked chicken, eggs and so forth. StillThinking I apologize for my comment now that I do know what you meant about his inconsistency. |

I agree he could do it either way, and that is entirely up to him, both our methods would work. Telling me I knew nothing about nutrition kind of set a spark though lol. Relating to me personally I was training for bodybuilding, not wrestling and wasn't to knowledgeable with nutrition, I was just some skinny kid that wanted to gain weight and lift weights so I did (a bit too extreme with the weight). Now, 4 years later I obviously know more and am 174lbs (as of yesterday) and 9% bodyfat, so your a bit leaner than I, damn you lol. Your apology is accepted, don't worry about it. As for the original poster, good luck on your journey and plug your nose if you get one of the GNC Weight Gainer 2200, they taste awful, I'd suggest Cytosport Cytogainer, I'm currently using the stuff and it tastes fantastic. |

Yeah my comment was a little uncalled for.
I was very knowledgeable about nutrition during wrestling, I had to be to know what I could and could not eat to maintain weight. I am only leaner now because I do more running than lifting now days. I've ran over 4,000 miles in 2007. 2008 I'm going for 5,000+ miles and already have 20 miles in to start off the new year. Once I start training for MMA full contact fighting again I expect to drop back down to 4% bodyfat. Yep the Weight Gainer 2200 is terrible! I use to mix mine in milk and blend in hersheys chocolate syrup and 2-3 teaspoons of peanut butter. Makes it taste a little bit better but drink it fast. The warmer it gets the worse it tastes. |

Going up or down its the same concept.
113lbs x 10 = 1130 rested metabolic rate x 1.8 life factor = 2034 calories. you eat 2034 calories daily. to safely gain weight 1lb weekly is 500 calories daily. 2034+500= 2534 calories. 6/2534= 422 calories. Meal 1 Meal 2 Meal 3 Meal 4 Meal 5 Meal 6 422 422 422 422 422 422 Spread your meals out every 2 1/2 hours which will give you 15 hours of burn on your metabolism. Also you need to anaerobic exercise, weight lifting to tear the body up so it can make repairs to build muscle. |

omg, i cant belive someone who claims to know alot about nutrition recommended GNC Weight Gainer Gold. wtf?? look, you get what you pay for and that stuff is mostly sugary empty calories. seriously, i was 5'11" and 120lbs. I started out on that crap for about 3 months and got nowhere. Then I went to Muscle Milk. Thats where its at!! And i wont even get into nutrient timing.
Just dont go for the cheapest "sam's choice" brand you can find. |

Is Serious Mass good for gaining weight? That's what I bought, I was using it for a while and I noticed it helped me build muscle quicker, although it didn't help me gain weight... Although I was only using it for 2 weeks... I think I'll start taking it after workouts again. I was wondering if it's any good though, so next time I go to buy my protein shakes, I know whether or not it's worth buying. |
