On this day in 1956 the world was graced with the first UH-1(prototype)!!! Applause
The whop, whop, whop of Huey rotor blades cutting through the air was heard & world was never the same. Cool

To all my fellow rotor heads lift a cold one to the most awesome helicopter(Iknow my opinion is biased)!!!

Our County Sheriff's Department has a Huey that is piloted by a Viet Nam Vet. The Moving Viet Nam Memorial Wall will be here for Veterans Day on November 11th and the Huey will be part of the Memorial Service.

ooorah! Love those Hueys! Real Helicopters.

Talk about the Pentagon and the contractors actually doing something right... these birds could be used as

A) Gunships
B) Ambulances
C) Troop haulers
D) Cargo haulers
E) and sometimes all of the above. *

* Check out the movie titled "We were Soldiers" ... Lot's of great footage with HUEYS ! Cool

We had some SF types that did low altitude jump from our Hueys. i didn't get to go on that flight, had to keep the A/C light as possible. Those guys are sick puppies! Jumping from a perfectly good A/C is one, doing it from a Huey takes "sick puppiness" to a whole new level!!!

Fun to repel out of, too - - but decided not to make a habit of it . . Roll Eyes

There was a push at Ft. Knox 1970 to get volunteers for "door gunner" for obvious reason, with cash incentive. Thinking about it, I walked over to the aerodrome to "check out" one o' them "Hueys." Reached around the door frame with finger and thumb to calibrate the thickness of the skin - paper-thin. Went back to the tank park, slid my hands down the under-side and top-side of an M-60's front slope while standing in the driver's compartment - 11" of hardened steel . . .

Passed on the cash - -

Moral of the story: An M-60 with tracks is better than an M-60 on a pivot mount hanging out in mid-air!! Wink Cool Big Grin

We had one of our 19Ds on rappel. He didn't rig himself properly. Leaned out & went straight down on his back. Fortunately, it was a sandy area. The "funny" part was, he was taken to get checked out. They ran an x-ray & it looked like he had cracked a vertebrate(sp)! Eek
Did another x-ray, only to find a hair or something gave a false impression of the cracked vert.

Greywolf, got an extra $85.00 a month for being a crewchief(SP/4 making E-5 pay! Smile). Granted I was fortunate & didn't have to earn that money the hard way(hot LZs & such).
