I'm impressed, Linda...now I have to show you folks what I have. Not near as old, but I and my friend are always "TRAINing"(wink-wink!) at every opportunity we have, time permitting. He's into "N" and "HO" scale, I'm more into the "HO" stuff. I have over 50 locos, most are diesels, and over 300 assorted freight and passenger/specialized cars. I have been fortunate enough to be able to operate some of the actual real-life prototype locomotives; I work for the Panama Railroad in Panama as Chief Engineer part of the year. Before 9/11, I was on the Amtrak Sunset Ltd, going all the way by train to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. with the Pres. of the Panama Railroad...the Amtrak train crew, delighted we were on their train, invited us up to the head-end loco, G.E. AMD103/P42 "Genesis" #826...I took it from El Paso to Alpine, TX. That new UniRail on rot-proof concrete ties is NICE! We were OK'd to 88mph for a good stretch of the rebuilt line. I've also guest-operated a 1970s-vintage GE Caterpillar-powered 60-tonner loco on an 18-mile-long "meter-guage" (3-foot, narrow-guage)working freight (bananas) railroad in northern Panama. Different! Ya don't get in a hurry on that line! Slow and easy...top speed of 25 mph MAX! DON'T bruise those bananas! Smile

Here's a few of my local rail sights:

Hoboken Terminal (Hoboken, NJ)

Orange Station (Orange, NJ)

IND Concourse Subway Yard (Bronx, NY)

Steam Powerhouse for the Hudson & Manhattan (H&M) Railroad (now known as the "PATH"), built in 1908 (Jersey City, NJ)

Mural of a bygone era - the "day" and "night" statues which once adorned Penn Station's four main entrances.

We went from this:

So sad.

Hey, Linda, I've got a real sign from a box car of the Panama Railroad, from the 1950s-1960s era. It was bolted to the outside of one of our 40-foot, steel AAR-spec'd single-door box cars. These are friction-bearing-wheeled cars. We still have a few,(about 100 assorted box and flat cars) but they seldom 'polish the rails' anymore. They are still serviced/maintained, and they are reserved for use in a pinch if car shortages occur, or if freight load surges exceed our available normal rolling stock capacity, where they will be placed into "hot" freight service with the rest of our much more modern equipment. Photos soon to be uploaded here... Beer
