Airmen Bomb Silly Safety Belt Rules, on Facebook

* By Noah Shachtman Email Author

You’d think men and women who handle heavy weapons, fly the planet’s most advanced airplanes, and take care of multi-million dollar equipment could be trusted to go outside at night without wearing a day-glo safety belt. The United States Air Force would beg to differ.

Instead, airmen are ordered to wear the reflective accessories from the late afternoon on. That goes for domestic installations, and for war zone bases, too. Just like the rule about puttering around at 25 miles an hour or less in your military vehicle.

The whole thing has got airmen pretty annoyed, as you can imagine. So about 2,900 of them have taken to Facebook to stage an informal, online protest against the safety belt regulation — and to make all kinds of fun of it. 400 folks have joined in the last day.

“Do you think Vietnam would have turned out differently if we had warn reflective belts? Could we have caught Osama Bin laden a long time ago if we were less reflective?” gripes one frustrated airman.

“There are confirmed snipers around the perimeter of the flight line…here, put on your reflective belt so you don’t get run over by a fire truck!” laughs another.

“Nothing says ‘I joined the wrong service’ than wearing your belt indoors, on shift. Way to go Air Force,” sighs a third.

But the group’s brightest highlight might be the mock PowerPoint presentation on the long history of the safety belt at war. “If not for the reflective belt, George Washington would’ve lost boats in the ‘fog of war,’ thus rendering his crossing of the Delaware River pointless.”

Yeah, yeah, whatever dud, i mean dude!!

The Army has had this type thing for a long time. In the Army, if more than two people in uniform are walking on a training installation, they must be in formation with one of them being the "Detail Leader", calling cadences to stay in step...as well as wearing the reflective "PT belt".

Rule #1 - there's no crying in baseball.

Rule #2 - Murphy was a grunt.

Rule #3 - you don't have to agree with the regs, you just have to comply with them.

Bunch of whiney-azz Zoomies. (Yeah. I know, I know - We got plenty of them in every service.)

Since Uncle Sam is paying for your off-duty lifestyle, do what he says or get on down the road. Plenty of folks to fill your shoes that will wear elf shoes for the right pay.

This is an 'All Volunteer Force'. No one held a gun to their head, there is no draft, they could join the unemployment line just as easy as the next buffoon.

I hate cry babies. Roll Eyes

These are my opinions. Yours may differ.

The civis are getting just as anal. I had to wear a vest while working on the floor of the warehouse so the forklift drivers won't run my azz over! Oh I guess it is easier to wear a vest than to put a driver's ticket and/or fire him for hotroding on the forklift. On the other hand, I modified my belt while I was in Belgium. I put a LCD flashing strip on my belt for early winter morning bike rides. I even used a Krill Light and a Velcro strap on my arm to make it easier to spot my bike on said dark Belgium winter mornings(I did have head and tail lights too.) Maybe the AF guys need to see the vid of the Sailor who got sucked into an intake, I don't think he was wearing a vest or belt either.

You're saying this guy needs a reflector belt to stand out?? What more does he need than that uniform to be seen for miles???
