It wasn't really much. All it was just a loft on top of an old horse barn at the time. I wonder if anyone ever got married or had a christening there. I'm sure it's not there any longer.

Did you ever look up some of the web-sites to Hahn AFB? There are some out there with lots of pictures, etc.

I sure do. The base closed years ago and it's a commercial airport now. Our barracks are used by German civilain police as a training academy. I was never able to locate the church we built.

The church was about a half mile away along the main road that exited the base. With the service members leaving, there probably would be no one to continue paying the monthly lease. Or if I'm really fortunate, maybe local citizens took it over. I wish there was a way I could find out. Maybe I'll drag Sam off for a vacation with me sometime and take a look.

We sure hope your son is recovering well. Prayers inbound-No charge!

Woops!

I just noticed Sam has had a setback. I'm in a job where I get second guessed everyday of the week and I've never liked that. Although I don't know what happen and it's none of my business, I can only support our mod's. They have a good track record here. In fact, it seems to take a good deal for them to react like this. They deserve our support.

Sam, if you're reading this, enjoy the rest of your summer. We'll see you back in 39.5 days.

I saw that too, scpd...and btw, I sent you an e-mail through your mil.com account...Wink

As for myself, I have been doing some "hibernating" lately...I'm sure you understand why, though I have been with you all here in thought and spirit.

Temptation to belly up to the bar has been forefront in my mind too much lately thus the reason for my self imposed exile.

Peace to all, every day that we awake!!

Never got it Cyn. I'm not even sure if e-mail here works that often. It can't be depended on.

If you do belly up, I'll be the guy drinking a Mountain Dew. That's until my trip up to Kittery, Maine on Labor Day. There's an annual race there I don't want to miss.

sspd3045 what was the towns name at Hahn? Maybe I can find out what happened to that church through the city web-site or through the mayor's office there. Who knows.

Lautzenhausen.

It was in the Hunsruck region of Rhienland-Platz area and in between the Rhine, Mosel, and Nahe Rivers. It was on the same northern latitude as Labrador, which accounted for the worst weather than any other base in Europe. Long winters and short summers.

I just heard our moderator, Strobelvets, decided to cut Sp4Sam's suspension from 40 days to 10. This is entirely a voluntary part on the mod for which I'm thankful. But it's also a reminder of our responsibilities of what we can and cannot do. The warnings are clear. No spamming. And when in doubt, the mod is right.

Kevin, I got a hold of a guy in Lautzenhausen that works in the mayors office. He will look and see if he can find out what happened to the barn/church. He said it may take him a little while though.
He will go the Air Base and ask some questions, plus ask some people that were around from 70-75 and might remember something.
I let you know if he finds something, if he does maybe he'll be extra nice and even send a picture of it.

Kevin, you are in luck. The building is empty, but still standing.
He is going to ask the owner if he may have some old pictures of what it used to look like and he is going to make some pictures of it how it looks like now. It may take a few days or so before I get them and hopefully I can forward them to you somehow, unless you can tell me how I can post pictures here. I am a little PC handicapped.
The guard at Hahn told him that it was a Baptist Church, not that it matters.

There are still some great people out there in this world.

The great people included those service members and their families who decided to build a church where there was none. It took a lot of work to get the finances, materials, and volunteers up and going.

I thank you 100 times for your efforts.

Did you hear about the three soldiers on a work detail? There was 2 privates and 1 sergeant on a cleanup assignment when it came time for a chow break. One of the privates found a magic lamp. When he rubbed it a beautiful jeanie emerged and promised one wish each.

The 1st private said, "I want a million dollar home on the San Francisco Bay". Poof, he was gone.

The 2nd private said, "I want a two million dollar home in Hawaii". Poof, gone.

The sgt. stood up and said, "Chow break is over. I want them 2 guys back here now!".

Funny. Big Grin Thanks for the laugh.

I am so bad at retaining jokes, can't ever tell one.
Wolfgang, the guy at the mayors office, wrote me back and told me that he will go out to Hahn this weekend and take pictures of the "church". I guess he will send them some time next week. He told me that Hahn is now a Civilian Airport, which handles about 3.5 million passengers a year.

By the way we live in Texas.
Our son should be out of Iraq by the beginning of November. Thanks for all the prayers and thoughts.
Your story about the church is really something. I told my husband about it and he said he doesn't think you could find too many people these days that would do something like that.
I still keep hoping that there are. Smile

I spent 24 months in Germany. The construction project was almost complete when I left in June '75. We were using it as a church, but there was still plenty of work to do. Most of the guys contributed their own money for materials hoping others later could benefit from the group effort.

You know how generalizations are generally true? I've found that our absolute best soldiers are from Texas. Don't know why, but it's always seemed that way. It's probably caused they were raised well.
