So at the end of this year I will be joining NROTC. I will be studying Construction Management and it has always been a dream of mine to join the Navy Seabees. I have told this to one of my professors and he said that is very unusual for someone to go from ROTC to Seabees. Is that true? Is it even possible for me to do so?

I don't know the answer to your question but there is an entire forum dedicated to ROTC questions here: http://forums.military.com/eve/forums just scroll down until you see ROTC and JROTC Forums

Disclaimer: I am not an expert nor do I play one on TV… I see no issue as long as your degree is in engineering that matches the CEC if you want to be a "line officer". Other officers with degrees that were not in CEC were not selected for CC, XO's CO's etc billets (commonly). We had NROTC officers, Annapolis officers, mustangs etc. He may be referring to a point that there are so few CEC's in number when compared to Fleet Navy that it seems uncommon. Out of 3 companies in boot camp I was the only Seabee slated. When I took my asfab I was slotted for four positions as a best fit, three were Seabees. They told me the last asfab result that came up at their station was two months prior. So, in all that does not mean anything to me other than there are fewer CEC's walking around than fleet officers. As a side note, my last OIC had a degree in science and he got a waiver to be rated as a CEC because his job was related to “construction” so in some instances there are waivers. Now…when I was in college in construction management I was told (when I joined back up in the reserves) that CM was not a degree the Navy would accept to be an officer in the Seabee’s. That may be a different topic altogether. |
