Good morning. My son was promoted to Corporal last summer and has asked for an NCO Sword for Christmas. I did a little on-line research and found a few sites that says the Sword is awarded and that you have to go to Sword School. I would appreciate the Community's assistance. I do not want to cause any problems for my son.

Not sure about that. You may want to go to Marine Corps Discussions and ask there.

My son's a USMC Corporal and he's never mentioned anything like that. I believe he borrowed one for a USMC wedding this past June. He's been a Cpl for a couple of years now and never was "awarded" one. Heck, he should be making SGT in the next month or two...still no sword. Big Grin

I appreciate the advice. Where would I find that particular discussion? This is the first time I have posted a question.

try here:

http://forums.military.com/eve.../frm/f/6510050131001

It's the section of military.com for spouses, family, etc. This particular link is for the "Back to Basics" section.

They are pretty up to date on info like this in there.

Example: this thread is titled "Marine Corps NCO Swords". "Thread", another name for "discussion".

Mom...
Congrats on your son's promotion!

Try this site: "www.grunt.com", also known as: Sgt Grit

It's owned and operated by a Former Marine, and has been in business since 1989.
Highly recommended!

Why not just ask your son to pick one out from a website... then go to the website and buy it.

They can cost anywhere from 150 to 500 dollars depending on the quality.

If you want to try to do it yourself you can of course, but why put yourself thru all the stress when he can do it and you'll get him exactly what he wants without all the drama.

I did this when I got promotoed. My mom sprung for the $450 sword that came with a wall display thingy and she keeps it at her house Roll Eyes she doesn't want me ruining it. She keeps all my promotion warrants and award citations too.

I could do that, money is not the problem. The problem is that he is not responsible and will not use the money for it's intended purpose. With that being said, I want to be sure that he can just "buy" a sword -- again because of his lack or responsibility. My research found 2 sites Military sights that said the sword was awarded for ..... and that sword school needed to be attended for proper protocols. Kinda like flare school and whistle school for police officers (like dad). I do appreciate you assistance. Thank you. Happy Halloween!

For occasions requiring the sword one may be issued by the armory.
Sword protocol is simple, any other Marine NCO can instruct your son.
Sounds like if you buy him one he'll probably just stab himself, wait a while until he settles down.

Thank you so much for your wise choice of words. I am glad to see that dad and I are not the only ones that are thinking along those lines. But, the advice about the armory is sound. I also appreciate your honesty.
