Actress Glenn Close ("The Big Chill," "Fatal Attraction") stops by the Editor's Desk to chat about her work with Puppies Behind Bars, a charity that allows inmates to train service dogs, which in turn are used to assist the disabled, including wounded Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. Can a Labrador Retriever help our heroes wrestling with PTSD?

Rob, thank you, that is an awesome program. It's a win win the inmate gets a chance to show they can do something worth while. The dog learns to assist a wounded veteran.
A dogs love is unconditional! Keep smiling, everyone will wonder what you've been up to! |

Good for her, I wish more Hollywood types would see her example.
Todays politics remind me of an old saying. - "Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas?" - Joseph Stalin |

Thanks Rob for posting this article. She also stared in three of our family's favorite movies, Sarah, Plain and Tall, Skylark, and Sarah, Plain and Tall: Winter's End.
It is so nice to see someone you like as an actor supporting our GIs. And to Sara I say, You go girl! A listening ear, a caring heart, an open mind and an extended hand may be all I can offer, but it is yours without charge or Judgment. |

Imagine that. A liberal Obama contributor....from Hollywoood even, that supports our vets. Who would have ever thought???? Ya think there might be a few other liberals out there that actually support our troops let alone serve???? I'm thinking there are. |

...and The Shield on the small screen. Great program to help with 'readjustment'. I don't think there's a viable 'free market' solution for those suffering with PTSD or the aftereffects of closed head injuries. If there were, somebody'd be selling it. Now go a-way or I shall taunt you a second time! |

You could be a case in point Weapons Officer...but YOU must remember that WE the People do differ some points surrounding politics... Doesn't make us unworthy or ignorant...just basic differences of opinion... Frankly, I still believe that is why our system works so well...in perilous times... |

Whatever your political affiliation Stroblevets, you are sensible. This is hardly the case for many of the right wing that frequent these very boards. When political differences come into play, many on the right insist no liberal serves in the armed forces, no liberal supports the troops and no liberal has what's best for the vets at heart. These are obviously the uneducated, uninformed and ignorant, but they post right here at Military.com. Come to think of it, some are highly educated. I guess they are too easily influenced by right wing talking points. |

+1. Thank you, Glenn Close, for airing a truly worthy cause where everyone wins - despite those that would turn it political. It's not that there is no God or that He isn't listening. You're probably just asking the wrong questions. |

Glenn Close comes from an exceptional family who are well aware of public service. Her father was a physician who worked on many frontlines to halt the spread of infectious diseases. His work to halt the Ebola virus in Zaire in the 1970's was highly lauded.
So it comes as no surprise that his daughter is standing behind a cause that will help others who have also given of themselves for the greater good. The "Hollywood jibe" is rather uncalled for. If you go through the rosters of the USO, you'll find names like Gary Sinise, whose LT. Dan Band has toured since 2003, or Robin Williams who has toured 4 times, and Lewis Black, as well as countless others who probably don't vote to the right. All of them have and continue to give countless hours and money to organizations like the USO, who, to their credit overlooks their political affiliations for the betterment of troop morale. |

Haven't seen a lot of her movies. Several are in either the "drama" or "chick flick" category that I steer clear of. But I did like her in Air Force One. She was the Vice President under Harrison Ford's character.
