I grew up with Led Zep, Zappa and the Stones and managed to enjoy cosmic cowboys after the final family deployment to TX. But last night I went to a dance on the USS Lexington in CC, TX and enjoyed big band music. In the process I got my arse run over by the gen (The Greatest Gen) that preceeded mine. Nothing like getting run over by guys in their 80's.

George, you like zydeco? I've been trying to dip my toes in that, myself. I like jadid, bhangra, jazz, classical, folk, some rock, blues, and some r&b. My parents were very confused at my wedding- they kept hearing long stretches of music they couldn't identify, then Nat King Cole would start crooning.

As a musician, my top is Jazz. This is due to the overall challenge involved in spontaneously comping, soloing and just letting it all go. It is really an emotional experience to lay your heart on the line and let all of your feelings come out through your instrument. And, just to be clear, I am not talking about that smooth jazz (aka, contemporary jazz) crap that you hear in elevators. I am talking about post-bop through the fusion period. Coltrane, Davis, JFJO, MMW, Mingus, Monk, Montgomery, Silver, Coleman, Taylor, Sun Ra, etc.

After that, I like Stravinsky, Zappa, Verese, Chopin, tchaikovsky, etc for my classical.

I still like my classics like Led Zep, The Doobies, Steely, Floyd, The Beatles, Allmans, GD, etc. But, I also dig newer groups like RHCP, Tool, The Cure, 311, Rage Against the MAchine, and so on.

I dig Motown: Gaye, Wonder, 4 tops, etc.

Unlabled: Estradasphere, Secret Chiefs 3, The Mars Volta.

To be honest, as a musician, I love it all. If it is good and strikes some kind of feeling in me, then I like it. I love all genres.
Even those that aren't even considered music in the normal sense (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Naked City).

There are only 2 genres that do absolutely nothing for me: rap and country. They just do not provide any feeling in me and offer no musical challenge. But, they are lyric based. I am not a lyricist, I am a musician. So, I guess that makes perfect sense.

I have over 100 gigabytes of music on one of my harddrives. To put it lightly, I listen to a lot of music.

Zydeco is pretty cool. Take a look at some klelzmer (I call it Jewish jazz), African and Brazilian ensembles and Sitar. There is a pretty cool Brazilian ensemble called Mono Blanco. My drummer friend ( since kindergar†en) is really into them. Lots of percussion.

Shoot, I even dig some polka if I am feeling frisky.

I've played in Brazilian ensembles, and a bit of high-life, but what I really prefer is African folk- the pop stuff doesn't turn me on. I love listening to bossa nova, but not playing it. As far as Indian music goes, my taste for the classical stuff comes and goes, but I really like bhangra and folk. As a musician, my preferences evolve, so my favorites are my favorites of the moment, but they won't be my favorites next month, I tell you. My love for opera, both European and Egyptian, however, is constant.

Had enough of Hannah when I worked with 5 year olds. Liked the kindergarteners, couldn't stand pop.
That said, I'll take Disney from "S*&# this, ho" rap music. I like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Nas, Lupe Fiasco, but many others do not get a look from me.
BTW: Mos Def narrated "Prince Among Slaves" it's on PBS, a documentary. Check it out.

I want to narrate a show and/or voice over for a cartoon movie. When I slung the caffeine drinks at a coffee conglomerate, wimmen told me all the time I have a great voice for radio. I translated that to mean my face sucked for film. But that's alright, I've been on a couple of filming sets already for fun.

I like live music, and usually see 20 or 30 acts a year. I HATE big halls and arenas, and have paid more than $25 for a ticket maybe four times. So it comes down to keeping my ear to the rail for up and coming bands and getting into the less popular acts that hit the smaller venues.

Best recent show??

Alejandro Escovedo and his sting quartet. we had seats in the front of the riser section behind the floor seats, and half way through the concert he brought the intruments out to behind the floor seats and played w/out a PA for 5 or 6 songs, right in front of us.

I took my daughter to see Cake for $5 and the blind boys of alabama for free. I recently drank tequila till 3am w/ commander cody -- the man is a sponge!!!

I have a couple decent ones on youtube:

I can take bluegrass. Lots of great fingerstyle guitar pickin'. Other than that, the closest I get to country is Johnny Cash, Les Paul (especially Chester and Lester), Chet Atkins and Hank Williams, Sr.

I'm not wild about either style yet, but like New England weather, if I don't like a musical style, I'll just wait a minute.
I go through phases where I'm wild about tango music as well. I'll see if I can give DH the bug when it comes around.

funny you mentioned polka earlier...... Growing up in a polka-centric town I used to say that I liked everything BUT polka. Then I caught a Buckwheat Zydeco show in 1983, and realized the accordian wasn't such a buzz-kill. A decade or so later, my immersion into Tejano and tex-mex completed the cycle, and I realize those old Pollocks, serbs, slovenians, etc. at all the weddings i attended as a kid could ROCK!!

"Yes I like Pina Coladas....and getting caught in the rain..."

And, as I have taught my 8 year old to say (much to the consternation of his 2nd grade teacher and his mother) , "Live like the '80s, score with the ladies...".
