In addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control facility, all aircraft in the Persian Gulf AOR are required to give the Iranian Air Defense Radar (military) a ten minute 'heads up' if they will be transiting Iranian airspace.
This is a common procedure for commercial aircraft and involves giving them your call sign, transponder code, type aircraft, and points of origin and destination.
I just flew with a guy who overheard this conversation on the VHF Guard (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe toDubai . It's too good not to pass along.

The conversation went something like this...
" Iranian Air Defense Radar: 'Unknown aircraft you are in Iranian airspace Identify yourself..'

Aircraft: 'This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace.'

Iranian Air Defence Radar: 'You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!'

Aircraft: 'This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 fighter Send 'em up, I'll wait!'

Iranian Air Defence Radar: no response ... Total silence

You might have seen this before but I liked it enough to show it again.

There are a lot of funny things going between ATCs and aircraft.

And you know this how? Any reason that you felt the need to call it fake?

I've heard some very interesting radio traffic in my years in the military and later the government. How 'bout you?

I'll tell you something. Anyone that expects all the anecdotes posted here to be true is making a sad mistake. Read it, enjoy it but don't assume all you read is gospel.

Is it real, no. Is it fun, yes.

Liberal90, there are some "fake" stories that are harmful, such as stories that cross the line into libel and slander, or insult a demographic, or are posted with the intent of causing a verbal cat-fight on the boards. This really isn't one of them.

Fake or not, it's funny. The only "commentary" it makes is that a Marine FA-18 fighter is tough stuff, and nobody with a lick of sense would be dumb enough to get into a scuffle with one.

Fake? Maybe.
Funny? Sure!
Harmful? Only to the ego of the Iranian Air Defenders.

That is just plain funny as heck. I guess Liberal90 just don't get the military sense of humor. Looking at the profile and the name itself, chances are hadn't been nowhere and done nuttin'.

I've always been fond of this (absolutely false) story since it first appeared:

quote:
ACTUAL transcript of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. This radio conversation was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on 10-10-95.

Americans: "Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision."

Canadians: "Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision."

Americans: "This is the captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course."

Canadians: "No, I say again, you divert YOUR course."

Americans: "THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH. THAT'S ONEFIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP."

Canadians: "This is a lighthouse! Your call!"

Unfortunately, these kinds of incidents take place world wide all the time -

Russian Planes Fly Over U.S. Naval Ships
Two Russian long-range bombers overflew the Stennis and the USS Blue Ridge several times at about 2,000 feet

by OfficialWire NewsDesk

WASHINGTON, D.C. — (OfficialWire) — 03/20/09 — Two Russian planes flew within 500 feet of U.S. Navy ships participating in military drills with South Korea, military officials said.

After trying unsuccessfully to contact the pilots, U.S. fighter jets met up with the Russian planes and flew with them until they left the area, CNN reported.

One incident occurred Monday, when Russian Ilyushin IL-38 maritime patrol aircraft flew over the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis while it was in international waters in the Sea of Japan. The Russian aircraft flew within 500 feet of the carrier, which was lower than other Russian flyovers in the past year, military officials said.

On Tuesday, two Russian long-range bombers overflew the Stennis and the USS Blue Ridge several times at about 2,000 feet, U.S. military officials told CNN.

Military officials said U.S. aircraft tried contacting the Russian planes on international air frequency radio channels on both days but the Russian pilots didn't respond.

An "Ilyushin IL-38 maritime patrol aircraft" is an attempt to copy out P-3 down to the rivets, and is anti-ship/sub capable:

Russian

American

Don't forget the Russian shoot down of the Japanese airliner full of people, the Chinese force down of one of our P-3 spy craft, and the American shoot down of an Iranian airliner full of people by one of our Aegis Cruisers, who mistook it as an attacking Iranian F-14 - -

Global examples of "Playing Chicken" happen all to often - -
