Okay, just to refresh my memory about the rules...

quote:
THE GAME

Any letter may be exchanged with any another letter, one for one.
Example: root - toot

Any set of double consonants i.e. ss, tt, bb. may be replaced with a single consonant or a single consonant with a double consonant.
Examples: cannon - capon or capon - cannon

Any set of double vowels (a,e,i,o,u and y & w accepted as vowels, old school) may be replaced with a single vowel or a single vowel with a set of double vowels.
Examples: bee - by or by - bee

If a word ends or begins with a vowel a single consonant may be added to the word on the beginning or end whichever end the vowel appears.
Example: become - becomes

If a word ends or begins with a consonant a vowel may be added to that word on the beginning or end that the consonant appears.
Example: pathetic - apathetic

It's METAMORPHIC, so if you want to add a rule then feel free to post a recommendation or just plunge in and DO IT!

Sargeant_green,

I just wanted to let you know that I have put this game in my English classroom. A lot of my students speak English as a second language. They love it. They have so much fun changing the words after someone else has just changed it.

We've added new rules, voted out others, and have had an all-around blast with it. We also made a rule that if another student challenges the legitimacy of another's word and is correct, the student who wrote the word that was challenged has to give up one of their homework passes (which are VERY hard to come by).

They've had a great time with it and it's only been up for a month. They are learning so many new words with it - all of the students are.

Just wanted to say thanks!

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, National Guard or Reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand that - Author unknown.

Right on!

Do you teach them colloquialisms? (sp)
I worked with a man in Social Services who was Cambodian. He had been in France in School when his country collapsed and he was spared. He was a Colonel in the Army and had only one son survive, he later reclaimed him and brought him to Oregon. Luke Polk (his American name) was interested in the colloquialisms and the humor involved. I taught him the rejoinder "finer than frog hair", he used it often and thanked me for his ice breaker in social circles. Humor always makes your company more relaxed.
Teaching English can be a tough proposition. Sometimes the tongue resorts to fighting a strange sound. I like riddles, rhymes and limericks as well. We have a language that is very structured but lets face it we speak differently than our prescribed language. When we have to "book" or "Scram" maybe some other thing such as those words that sound the same like wear, ware and where. What a tough deal coming to this conuntry and learning our ecclectic system of language. No wonder the world is paranoid of America our language almost becomes a secret code to be unlocked by the pedantic traveler.
