Public Enemies premieres next week, July 1st. For those that dont know, its a movie that will feature the rise and fall of John Dillinger. Johnny Depp will portray John Dillinger, Christian Bale portrays FBI Agent Melvin Purvis, and Billy Crudup portrays FBI Director Hoover. The previews look good, but I'm wondering if it will be just a "historical action" movie or an attempt to glorify an infamous criminal.
The subject matter of this new movie doesn't merit my money or interest, at least from the promotional 'trailers' I've seen so far. I'll pass, ask others' opinions and wait until it comes out on DVD...
Well look at it this way, after Public Enemies, nothing worth a damn at all comes out until GI JOE and from what I've heard about that movie, its going to suck too.

My wife and I saw it opening day. Iknew quite a bit about Dillinger prior to seeing the movie, and IMO it was historically accurate. The director went to great lengths to recreate the real film footage of Dillinger we've all seen. You'd swear it was the real thing! And Depp looks so much like Dillinger anyway. And if you like shoot-em-up action, this is the movie for you. Because it's ENTERTAINMENT, I'm not going to nitpick about firing a Thompson Submachine at someone...and actually hitting them! All in all, worth seeing.
I saw it last night. It's great entertainment. As for historical accuracy, well, that remains to be seen. No, it wasn't Hollywooded up. What I found is that there are a lot of disagreements on how certain events happened. For example, in the opening scene, we see how Melvin Purvis got Director Hoover's attention when he killed Pretty Boy Floyd. The historical accuracy is that Purvis did, in fact, get Hoover's attention from that incident. The historical controversy is whether or not Purvis did shoot/kill Floyd. No doubt he got the credit, but there are some unsettled disputes as to who actually killed him. I'm glad they didn't go into that and went with the popular version. A lot of the events are true; however, some of them were out of sequence and some of them took liberties.
But hey! If you want accuracy, then watch a Discovery Channel documentary.
This definitely didn't glorify John Dillinger. And it certainly didn't hero worship Melvin Purvis.
