I am leaving Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah Ga to PCS to Ft Lewis and am interested in learning about the area. What are good places outside the immediate area to look for housing, ie apt, condo, house, etc, etc.? I will be in the area around or about the end of March 2008. Thanks for any assistance here.

Check out the following websites.

Springstreet (www.springstreet.com) to look for rentals.

Bestplaces (www.bestplaces.net) to compare areas

Greatschools (www.greatschools.net) to compare schools nationwide - shows testing scores.

FtLewis.com (www.ftlewis.com) - civilian website with links to commercial & private rentals/sales.

If you live on Ft Lewis, your kids (if you have any) will attend the Clover Park school district. When I was there that district was the pits!!! Mainly military kids, but it seemed like the state did NOT give them the money needed to provide hardly anything to them. Middle school had kids sharing books in class, and not enough for them to bring home for study.

The following areas are pretty good to live in:

Puyallup - building up quite a bit, lot of military, longer commute due to traffic. In Pierce County, average taxes.

University Place - nice area, cheek-to-cheek with Tacoma. In Pierce County, average taxes. Good schools.

Yelm - South of Ft Lewis. Decent schools, based on ratings. In Thurston County, cheaper taxes.

Enjoy Washington state. Wish I was back there now.

I live here in Washington State. I worked on Ft Lewis and McChord AFB. I lived in University Place. It's close to the water for scuba diving (biggest octopus in the world in puget sound). Stay away from Tacoma South hill area. Lots of crime. Spanaway is also okay to live in but noisy due to Air Force planes . Better to live out in University Place to get away from Airplanes and freeway traffic.
