I was just sitting on my porch and admiring the autumn foliage and the critters that are so common to rural Ohio. All the while I was also admiring the flocks and flocks of birds that I have not seen in far too many years. But, then it occurred to me that they were all flying North. The sky was filled with birds flocking North.

I must admit that it has been a good 6 years since I have seen flocking birds. But, I do not recall them all flying North. Have any of you seen this? Do they do this just before they turn South? What gives?

I saw Canadian geese heading south in Sept, a little early. The mallards stay here, western WA. year round, even when it snows, but our normal snow fall is about 2 inches, normal low temp is 20 above I did see another flock of Canadian geese flying south last week, a while later, they came back heading north.

I have seen a ton of Canadian Geese flying South. And, we have Mallards here, as well. But, today I took my laptop and my radio out to my porch and listened to the Browns game (they won), surfed the net and read a few chapters of a book. And, there were a chit ton of birds in the air. All of them going North. I am sure it is nothing and I am just not used to being in Ohio (very much a relearning experience after almost 6 years in SoCal). But, it was pretty crazy. As a flock would go by you could hear the air on their wings so loud that you would have thought that it was amplified in amplitude. But, every flock was going North. Otherwise, I would have never even really noticed anything but the beauty of it all. It was just weird.

Maybe the Canucks are giving away tons of free chow?

We have Geese and duckies that stay here year round. As long as they have chow and open water (usually around power plants) they are good to go.

Perhaps you observed the migration pattern of the elusive "Ki-Ki" bird. That are called this because they have 2" legs and 3" testicles. Therefore, when they land upon a snow covered branch, they will give off the piercing cry of Ki-Ki-Christ, that's cold! Big Grin

You just reminded me of my first polar bear swim. Um, yeah.... I won't be doing that again. And, especially not in the oily Great Lakes.
