Former Army Sergeant here.

I work with a guy that was in the Marines.
Claims he was in for 10 years.
In that 10 years:
1. Drill Sergeant.
2. Recruiter.
3. Crewmember aboard Marine One.

Is all that possible in a 10 year period?

Please advise!

I worked with a guy like that once. I told him it was hard to believe that a guy could do all that and be only 147 years old. Wink

Yes; not likely, but it can happen!

I served with a Nam Vet who was assigned Recruiter duty on his return from Nam (Cpl), followed that with a stint on the White House Guard (Not Marine One), came over to the Rock for a WestPac Float, and shipped out for DI School when he rotated out from there!

Very squared away Marine and had a heck of a good sense of Humor!

Met a SGM that went in the Army in 1966 and spent 20 years in the States! Big knee pads I guess.

Why not? I was

a Tanker - 11E

a Cavalryman - 11D(Abn)

back to a Tanker - 11E(Abn)

an Infantryman - 11B(Abn)

a heavy weapons leader - 11C(Abn)

and lastly a Combat Engineer - 12B

so why not what the OP brought up?

Call it anything you want: womens intuition, 6th sense, or your gut. If you think somebody is full of chit you are probably right. Stick to your insights. Don't jump to conclusions based on partial information, but your instincts are right more than they are wrong. They're earned from generations of maturity and life experiences. Sometimes you won't even be able to explain them, but they still exist. My father always said if it's alright to fall in love at first sight, it's also OK to dislike some s.o.b. as soon as you meet him too.

Some veterans, cops, and fire fighters are still alive because they reacted to hunches. Follow yours.

You never know, some are stuffed full like a Christmas turkey, while others have been places and done things beyond belief.
I tried to list the countries that my daughter visited while flying aeromed evac, I gave up, there just weren't enough places to leave off the list!

I hope this isn't too far off topic but does deal with people that claim to have done many things throught their lives.

I've been around a long time and have been fortunate to have done many things in my lifetime. I often don't mention some of what I've done for fear of not being believed. For example, when my wife and I were dating I happened to mention that, at one time I owned my own plane (Pipper Tripacer). Years later an old friend of mine who happened to have been my CFI visited us and we were discussing the good old days of flying. Only than did my wife admit that she had never believed me.

How come I pressed "One for English" and still can't understand a word the dude is saying?

It seems to me that the people who really "were there, done that" tend not to carry on about it but are selective about the people they discuss it with. Those who blow on and on tend to reveal themselves as wannabees. No skin off my nose, let them blow, I don't need to listen. One guy, a neighbor actually, looked like one of those. It totally blew my mind when I saw the proof of a ton of his boasts. Who'd a guessed?

Some people try to stay in the "status quo." Some people see the military as an opportunity for a wide range of education and experience opportunities...

My old man told me, basically, that the Army was a great place to get an education. "They'll throw school after school at ya if ya want 'em. Apply for everything that comes along!" I found that to be true, and each opened another door. Maybe your guy just did something similar - In the case of one school I almost landed while at Ft. Knox (some communications specialist thing), the top graduates from there were picked to work in the communications center for the White House. I missed out because I couldn't transcribe Morse code fast enough - Now, I can't even remember the stuff . . so it goes ... --- ... Confused

Very impressive Wolf...considering you went from E-3 to E-5 in 4 months! I enlisted in March of 70 and was advanced to E-3 in December 70.

This may be possible and a job for Super-Duper Marine! Moi, if we could only have a expanding space program. **Secret** hush, now. I wanted to go into the space program and be an astronaut. But, alas, my dreams of being the first leatherneck on Mars (for it is a red planet) is going fast quickly.

I'm not saying this isn't possible. But, I still sit at amasement the power of connections, who you know. The remainder of us mere mortals have to get there through effort.

Example, Lewinsky (I did not have sex with that woman, you know who) graduates from the London School of Economics. I couldn't be able to get in, and I'm a Cornell graduate, etc. But, through connections, Lewinskly gets in and actaully graduates!

I've known Marines who are sooooo well connected.

Went through the NCO Candidate Course at Ft. Knox - 12 Weeks. Graduated tops of the class and was recommended for "Junior Cadre Course" at the Drill Sergeants School (3 weeks). Graduated "Honor Graduate" and was recommended for Drill Sergeants School. Did a few months as Assistant Drill Sgt (D-5R-2, AIT/Recon) waiting for the school orders, but when they arrived, so did orders for Vietnam - but got diverted from destination Vietnam to destination Germany at Ft. Louis Washington. Shipped to Ft. Dix, then Frankfort, the Ayers Kasern, Kirk Goens, Germany to Recon/Scout Plt CSC/HHC Company 3d Bn 33d Armor...

And all of that in just one year - my head took a while to quit spinning - -! Wink Beer Cool Big Grin

Wow! Applause

I saw an E-8 go to an E-1 just about that quickly; all it took was an Ax-handle and a power-mad, mouthy, butter-bar abusing his men!

The Top said that it was worth every stripe; though I'm not so sure he still feels that way (he got a life sentence)!

Big Grin

As far as I could find out Waslewski, in the picture with me, was either badly wounded or killed at An Loc. He went immediately after graduation. I was delayed by all the gyrations to get into Drill Sergeants school... By the time I got orders for Nam, Nixon decided to send a few to Germany instead - I was among the first 200 to be diverted, May of '71...

And the rest is history..so, how did you make the transition from SSGT in the Army to Captain in the Air Force?
