In full go, it doesn't touch the water at all, so it isn't really a "hydro-plane" or hover-craft - -

I guess it really just has a very limited altitude, angle of attack and climb rate - Wink

Did you happen to catch that swiss airline pilot that strapped a pair of wings to his back and made a solo flight across the English Channel?Only wings with small jets mounted on them. No tail or nose just his body.Leaned his head when he wanted to turn. Made the 22 mile crossing in ten minutes. When he wanted to land he shut off the jets and used a parachute to land. Could be the new commuter over traffic jams.

Swiss Air was always noted historically for its 'efficiency'...that pilot demonstrated a new way to deal with parking and traffic issues! He took the company's attitude to heart!

That Russian "thing-a-ma-bob" must be alot like flying a huge building or a brick--heh-heh-heh--!! It sure looks cumbersome and ponderous...the cockpit almost looks like an afterthought! I watched that huge AeroFlot Antonov 225 SuperFreighter take off from Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. It rolled, and rolled, and rolled some more...full bore power and still it rolled on down the runway. Finally, it just sort of mushed into the air, even though it was then unladen. It had carried a huge transformer here from somewhere else in the world. Nothing we have or had was big enough to carry the load, except this Soviet-built leviathan, the Antonov 225. The huge C5-D "Galaxy" looks much like a 'teenager' next to the Antonov 225 'adult'.

GWG, the "angle of attack" of that flying building/brick was pretty much the angle the missiles were directed to fly at! LOL -LHA-3 Rusty Big Grin Beer

The craft in question is the Ekranoplan aka Caspian Sea Monster.

Originally concieved as a high speed means of transporting troops over water, the Ekranoplan was later modified as a fast mobile anti-ship/surface-surface missile launch platform for the Russian military.

Yes this is what is called a "Ground Effects Vehicle" or GEV. It relies on the ground or water in this case for its semi flying abilities.
Civilian versions of these require no pilots license as the are not able to fly of their own accord.

I dug this up for the Bond, James Bond trivia board, and since it WAS an airplane I'll post here too.

The first time I read about this little cutie was in Pop Mech way back when I must have been in 7th or 8th grade. Of course the one they showed was the prop job.
