This can be debated until the cows come home...
The newer killers of today shoot up a mall or school. They act impulsively. The older killers (Son of Sam, Jack the Ripper, etc...) had no video games to set them off. They acted more methodically. They all have one thing in common though. They all DECIDED to kill, for whatever reasons. It just seems to me that anyone that walks into a mall or school with a loaded gun absolutely KNOWS they won't come out alive. To me it's purely "Suicide by Cop". They just want the easy way out. Definately screws loose for both groups. Of course we don't know how long the older group could get away with it today due to forensic evidence advancements. No offense GW, but I believe that a crazy person is still going to have a trigger, whether it's a chance encounter, video game, or a book. Rage is rage and I believe that stems from their environment/peer presure more so than the idiot box. |

This isn't "a gut feeling" or a "religious experience" of what you believe or not. If you want the best example of how visual propaganda works, look at what the Nazis and/or the Communists did by bombarding their societies with slogans and images to drill into their heads just exactly what they were expected to think and do... Did it work? Now, you look at Americas advertising, especially as to how products and music, and movies and videos are all linked and focused on kids and adolescent to get them to say, think, sing, dance, do and spend their money exactly as they are programed to. If you can't see that going on - even right here on this site to get you to buy the above video game - then you need you eyes checked... Now, once impressionable young people become programed to depend totally on these thing for their sense of self, it becomes very possible, even probable, that they will become more brutal and violent as the mechanisms become more brutal and violent. And the music, videos, movies and games HAVE become more and more violent, because the old ones just don't have the stimulus level any more. More explosions, more gore, more torturous ways of killing with more explicit, life-like graphics . . . And what we are describing here is engineered addiction - - And when the point comes for some that the TV Screen or computer game just can't deliver a higher high any more - when the thrill just can't be reached by simulation - the temptation comes to really start stealing cars and racing them on the city streets, or myabe shooting up the houses of a neighbor, or walking into a mall or some other building and seeing how many targets can be shot down before the ammo runs out - - Denial and Rationalization won't make reality go away - - Oh, by the way, "The McCalls are here!!" bang bang! Almost Mystical!! A Visual FEAST!! - Two men got out of a car with faces covered at a High School in Detriot and started shooting today, hitting or killing (?) 5 targets - - Deja Vue all over again as we speak - - coming next to a school near you - - This message has been edited. I think Video games have less to do with killings, than the internet does.
Propaganda is spread better in forums and chain emails than EVER before. put down some rhethoric, and add a big name actor's name to it and it magically becomes Gospel, with no oversight, no accountability, and no responsability. just judging by posts in theis very forum (MilCom) and seeing the reaction GROWN men and women have to them, the reaction a teenager would have would be wholely dependent on what he sees as acceptance. I decry all the "illegals" hate posts, in part because of where they lead. Immigrants being targeted by teens on the streets because they MIGHT be illegals (see cases in Queens, NY. in Houston, TX. in Brooklyn, NY). it is nothing short of the Propaganda the Russians and the Germans practiced in the early to mid 1900's, but the effects of this propaganda goes ALL OVER THE WORLD |

Here is what I found on the shooting....
At least 2, and possibly 3, masked gunmen in a green minivan shot at a group of young teens waiting at a bus stop near Cody High School in Detroit, Michigan injuring seven. Students had just finished Cody 9th Grade Academy summer school classes and were on their way home when the shooting occurred. Witness statements suggest it was a targeted hit on at least one of the seven teens at the bus stop. When the green minivan pulled up to the students the gunmen asked for one teen by name, got confirmation, and then started to shoot into the crowd. The names and ages of the seven victims have not been released but at least two of those shot are in critical condition and two more are in serious condition. The victims span in age from 14-16; 3 are girls, 4 are boys. Only five of the injured were students at Cody High School, the other two were just at the bus stop, and it is unclear if any of the victims even knew one another. |

Well heck, one could say that the Coyote was constantly out to kill the Roadrunner. I don't imagine anyone's strapping themselves to a giant ACME firework.

Yeh, roadrunner taught kids to by Uzis and MAC-10s for their next trip to school. Great attempt at denial.
By the way, a little kid was killed in Utah some years back after one of the Superman sequels came out. His parents bought him a costume because he liked the film so much. Wearing his outfit, he jumped out of a 3rd story window - - Young people constantly blur the boarder between their fantasies and reality, as do a growing number of "adults" - - Look at the rash of idiotic injuries among young people that swept the nation after "Jackazz" started airing on teenage mind-control stations MTV/VH1. Look at the growing trend of gang beating someone or committing rape and posting it on YouTube - - Right now, locally, there is a rash of car thefts taking place where the thieves are racing around, using the cars for various kinds of mayhem, the going up in the canyons and running the vehicles off high ledges. I'm waiting for the perps to get caught, and the instigation turning out to be various Video Games and a desire to post the videoed acts on the internet - - But, of course according to your (il)logic, media has no share of the blame - for either planting the idea, or providing the forum to brag about it - - Keep telling yourself that, while keeping your fingers crossed that you're not the next target! So should I not allow my 15 yr old son to watch the news? Maybe while I'm at it, I should not let him watch hockey so he won't attack someone with a hockey stick? Heck, I could even go so far to isolate him by not letting him talk to his Marine Corps brother and hear stories of how to kill people. Come on.... Military.com is full of people who have probably had some to a lot of training in how to kill. Yet, how many do so back here on the streets of the U.S.? Don |

What is real is real and must/should be faced. But is "News" real or manipulative? Time out a news broadcast some time. You will find that advertising time (Viagra?) outdoes news time...
Speaking of "News", what would be happening in America if the real blood and guts of the violence in the Middle East was shown? Watch this segment from European news and ask yourself why it was never aired in the states. It is of an Abrams tank after hitting a mine or being hit by a rocket. At the time, the Government was touting the myth of the Abram's invulnerability: http://www.youtube.com/v/ZPndH3N59sk&hl=en&fs=1 Not too many Armor Recruiters want that one shown - - Back to topic - too many people are using video games and movies for themselves and their kids as mental baby-pacifiers, rather than getting out and doing something constructive. The only video games and movies that can hold attention any more are becoming more and more violent, grotesque, and gory. They have the same mind-numbing affect as drugs, and the next fix needs to be a higher dose, and a higher dose, and a higher dose. For some, when the dose on the tube just can't release the adrenalin and endorphins any more, the next step will be experimentation with the real thing, especially if some kind of peer approval or recognition can be attended by it - - The two ultimate thrills are "doing it for/to the crowd while chancing getting caught" - - Wandering and Wondering |

As i see it, people who blame Video Games, and Press, And any other reason why their kids proved to be pieces of sh*t, should be blaming themselves for not MONITORING or EDUCATING their kids. in today's society, we are all too often obsessed with our careers, and working to pay bills, and we spend little time with our kids. they are, instead. hels in check with the TV. they get their SOCIAL education off the tube, and not at home with parents who will show them "right from wrong" all too often, the crimes these kids commit are cries for attention. and attention they get. it kills me whenever i hear people saying "rock music and TV caused it" they mey have CONTRIBUTED, but the cause was invariably the parents |

Maybe this will make you feel better. Two years ago, my then 12 yr old son asked me for the game, "Guitar Hero". I said, "BS, if you are going to spend that much time on a game, I'm going to get you a real electric guitar to spend all that time on." You ought to hear him now. The kid spends up to six hours per day on that thing when it's crappy weather outside. I upgraded his amp last Christmas and he turns 15 in a few weeks so I already gave him an early gift, a much better guitar. He loves it. Man, can that kid play! Don |

While my son has many of those violent games, the game he plays the most is "Skate 2" which is some skateboard game. Don |

"guitar hero" is an enigma to me. i cannot play it to save my life, but i can put the fake guitar down and play the songs on the real thing, or on the base, or on the drums. what a waste of time that game is. i know people who fancy themselves "musicians" because they can breal a million on "Rock band" or on guitar hero.... losers.... |

That's pretty much what I told my son...."When the game fades out of popularity, you'll still be playing the guitar for decades to come." Don |

I was waiting for that one. In the 50s and early 60s, that argument might have some weight but it doesn't wash any more. There has been a systematic assault on "The Family" and "Fathers/Fatherhood" and "Parents" in general by Hollywood and Visual Media ever since the 70s. Parents, especially Fathers, have been systematically characterized as foolish, stupid, idiotic drunkards and neanderthals, not to be trusted, listened to, or obeyed by their "much more intelligent, sophisticated, and knowledgeable childern." Such shows as Dick van ****, Archie Bunker, Married with Children, The Simpsons,, etc., and a plethora of teen movies and music lyrics/trends/videos have pretty much destroyed the credibility of parents - especially Fathers. And if you think you are competing with those electronic on an even playing field, try timing out how much time you interact with your kids, as opposed to how much time a day they are plugged in and tuned up!! And if you do try to stand up against the hip trends, you will at a minimum be labeled "out of date," but more likely threatened with the term "bigot", since most electronic endevors consider the war against good parenting won, and are moving towards breaking down all social mores/moral that once held this culture together. Most of it is unstoppable in the drive to total decadence, even with the occasional death of a totally self-indulgent, perverted, self-medicating, decadent Teen Idol... But at least some effort might be made in momentarily stemming the perpetuation of some of the bloodiest violence - - But that will prove impossible - because those who should be standing against the proliferation of electronic violence often are among those quickest to defend it, or rationalize away its true threat... You can't "preach to the choir" if they have abandoned the pews for the video arcade at Vanity Fair . . . Wandering and Wondering |

Wow....if that wasn't fitting for this thread. The filters cut out Dick Van D-y-k-e to protect us all from self destruction. I'm just surprised his first name made it on the post. Don |

It was three young guys and they shot seven people at a bus stop. Two are critical and the rest have probably been released by now. On this one, I'll say that games could have a play in this but I'd be willing to be it was a particular genre of music, "gangsta rap". Notice I said a particular genre since all rap is not negative. It's just that you'll probably never hear the positive lyrics that talk about pride, family, real manhood and love because that's not what sells and that's not what the record companies push. What saturates the airwaves are the violent, nihilistic lyrics that worship materialism and brutality as the true tests of manhood. So now you've got little teenage punks who not only talk the talk but try to walk the walk. Truth is, in our salad days most of these punks would've never been heard from because they don't have the balls to go one on one with their fists but it's easy to get a gun and it's easy to pull a trigger, especially if you live in a moral vacuum. When my daughter enrolled my grandkids into Tae Kwon Do, they stopped listening to that crap as they advanced and now prefer music that you can move and dance to. I think confidence and family support have a lot to do with it. Too many kids today have neither. |

That was true of my youngest son. He got pretty heavy into various "shoot 'em up" games after injuring his back and having to quit the sports he loved - mainly football (6'3" 250lb as a sophomore)... He became very depressed because he couldn't even walk the hills with me to go hunting or anything... Then he started watching the Bruce Lee docudrama, including his back injury and such - - The next thing you know, he's signing up for Tae Kwon Do - then he's a black belt. Then he signs up for Karate - then he's a black belt. Then he signs up for Kung Fu - then he's a black belt. Then he signs up for computer technician classes and graduates top of the class. Then he signs up for Law Enforcement College and graduated 2nd. Now he's a policeman who is expected to develop computer integration and analysis use for his department and teach Hand to Hand techniques at the Law enforcement Academy - - The computer games are gathering dust in the other room - - Wandering and Wondering |
