I just got an email from closecombat.com about a teenage who was ganged up on from a bunch of gang members and was covered in alcohol and set on fire. I read that this kid was so scared of these gang memeber he begged not to go to school on monday. His parents went to the school about it on tuesday but it was to late. Things like this happen all over the world, not just at schools. So, shouldn't all kids with good moral values learn some sort of self defense? What do you think?
Bill, No matter what a kid learns he would have had to started years before to be any good, and there is always someone better than you. I could go on but I think I would just bore everyone.
As a real bad guy told me about a month ago, that there are people that prey and those that are preyed upon. This is the way it is and always will be.
The weak will aways be bullied.
He told me that it is that way in prison and on the outside.
A person has to decide which one he wants to be.
The world has not, nor will it change.
I think he is right. People are one or the other. If you are the one that preys you will always be OK. That said the preyer is the one that is strong and the prey are the weak.
My kids were into little league, so they carried baseball bats a lot. And they always watched out for each other. Bullies seemed to avoid them...
The youngest is also a black belt in Tai Quan do, Kung Fu, and Karate. He is now Team Leader for the County SWAT team. Even though he is the baby of the family, bullies still avoid him. Go figure - -

I don't completely disagree... cause that's just nature. But I think there is also one that Protects the weak. I've never been one to stand by while some kid who always gets picked on has to be pushed around because of the way he looks or because of something that happened to him/her in the past. Being strong is not just preying on someone, especially someone strong preying on the weak. Being strong is sticking up for the weak, and facing what is stronger than you.
Yaknow when I was a kid if I got in a fight my mother would kick my azz!
So I took that to mean that fighting was BAD! And wouldn't fight....still got my azz kicked and then went home and got it kicked again...HMMMMMM?????
When I was nine I decided this wasn't workin'!
One day at school while lined up at the head of the stairs waiting for the bell little Joey Chote...my friend...knuckled me in the back..I turned around grabbed him and threw him down the stairs! Poor little ****e broke both arms! boy was I in for it now....I survived and learned something.
I was gonna take a beating or two anyway, so why should I be the only one getting bashed around??
I never backed down again, from anything! Did I lose some of those brawls you betcha!! but the other guy knew he'd been in a dust up, BIG TIME!!
It's amazing what happens to bullies after you knock out a tooth or two even if they win....they leave you alone. Hitting you, hurts them, each and EVERY time!!
I've thought for a long while Martial Arts should be a required part of school, starting from the first grade. In my opinion it would not only be about self defense, but mostly about kids learning discipline and respect. Even more importantly it would give a way to "vent" for kids having problems, especially now that MMA has grown so popular around the world.
It would need damn good teachers though, so that kids are encouraged to train and work through their individual obstacles. Kids should also be punished (but not tossed out) if they fight outside the ring or mat.
Also, the school training centres should be open at almost all hours, giving kids a place to go instead of the streets.
One word "Liability." Football, lacrosse, even wrestling are considered nothing more than sports. But as soon as you teach a kid to make a fist and strike, you are entering a whole different point of reference. If you teach a kid to make a fist and strike, and he goes outside an does that to someone, you are going to get your socks sued off. That's why boxing and marital arts are not in schools. When I was a kid, we boxed in PE classes, wearing gloves as big as pillows. You don't see that any more. The coaches wanted me to wrestle after the football season, but I wanted to box, so I had to go to a private gym for that - -
As for teaching self protection to kids, one piece of advice always worked for me: "If someone is trying to bother you or hurt you, make a fist and hit them on the nose as hard as you can and as often as you can." I think Dad told me that when I was 5 or 6.

It still seems to work..........
I couldn't help but laugh.... That's some funny schidt right there....
This thread is an interesting read and I do think kids should be taught self defense. When our son was in junior high school, he came home furious because some kid (not even a friend of his) on the bus was being harassed by older kids and our son stepped in the middle of it. There were a lot of drive by shooting happening at that time. I told him to mind his own business and stay out of it if he could but he saw a weaker person that couldn't defend himself and our son stepped all up in the schidt. I was worried.... That was a long time ago but I remember it well.
