I thought we had a thread for computer problems and solutions. I couldn't find it! Frown

My problem is I can't get the disc defragmenter to start. I've used a couple months ago, anyone have any ideas?

Norm, thanks for the advice, but I already did that, it didn't work. I did try it again, after you suggested it, but no go. I'm still open for advice!

If you are using XP, go to Control Panel, click on Performance and Maintenance, then click on rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster. The disk defrag screen should show up, then follow directions from there. Or click on My computer form the start panel and then click on Control Panel form the left hand side of the screen and go from there.

Bruce, on my ancient computer I had to log off and then go into safe mode to defrag. That was the only way I could do it. How old is your computer?

Actually, the point Cindy brings up occurred to me as well, but I rather doubt you're running Win98 or WinMe?

If XP, try this: START, RUN, key in:

%SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.msc

and press OK! That'll start the Defrag module assuming that it hasn't been corrupted or accidentally deleted!

If this works for you, it might be time for a "R"epair ("in place upgrade") of your Windows install which requires a REAL Original WindowsXP CD which matches your "base" version; this cannot be performed with a "Restoration" CD such as you get with most OEM systems such as HP, Compaq, Dell, Gateway, etc., etc!

If the CD doesn't have the Microsoft Holographic Label on the CD, don't mess with it unless you've got all of your data files, email data, and Internet browser bookmarks safely backed up on CD, DVD, or external HDD (and KNOW how to properly restore it to it's proper place)!

If all of this frightens you, take it to your local small Computer Repair Service (not at one of the Box stores such as Staples, Circuit City, et. al.).

Have fun!

Buy a defrag program. The ones usually built into Windows are crap.

You can find them pretty cheaply these days.

For XP Windows users:

In order to system defrag and scan disk:

Accessories program off the Start Menu
Scroll to System Tools
Select Disk Clean-up FIRST
Select Disk Defrag SECOND

Yoou want to scan-disk first before you defrag. It allows for a better defrag process.

defrag. Glad I no longer have to deal with that.

But, just to 2nd mcgreer, definitely get a defrag program. Not only are they better, but they also have a few extra options and goodies that are very useful.
