Both programs are relatively new - neither civilian personnel nor retirees have been allowed to live on-post/base before. There aren't THAT many civilians living in quarters - and they do PAY for the privilege. Do you have any idea how much of the military's work is now done by civilians?
If the civilian personnel are mission-essential, I have no problem with them living on-post/base. The "old worn out whole [sic] in the wall bases" are installations that have been put on the BRAC list. BRAC'd installations are sold or - in a few cases - turned over to other branches of government. I don't see anything wrong with selling them off to retirement communities ... it beats letting them deteriorate all to hell. I really don't understand your beef. FWIW, usually people introduce themselves a bit with their first post - don't just start beyotching. |

You may have a valid point, but do use more of an introduction of your issue as Cider states. I am a 21 year retiree who follows most of this type of news fairly closely and haven't seen what you are referring to. Try again with some back up to your issues. I agree with Cider, introducing yourself before posting goes a long way to gain relationships.
Keep smiling, everyone will wonder what you've been up to! |

You might give some specific examples (name some places and give whatever PROOF you have that something inappropriate is actually taking place). Why would a retiree, except in very bad health, want to live on or near a base anyway?? Wandering and Wondering |

Hey 8253085, welcome to the club. Once you have visited for a while, you find very little mercy. My advice is to take advice when offered and grow a thicker skin. You are going up against pretty effective debaters (master sometimes). No one has attacked you, just trying to get more specifics than a gripe.

It would make sense to open some unused barracks to homeless vets and struggling retirees - but under stringent conditions of keeping up the places, hygene, cleaning etc Like the old Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) - but don't expect to see it any time soon - -

Part of the Forest Glen Annex of Walter Reed Army Medical Center (where the PX, Commissary, the old VN-era psych wards and other stuff is located - in MD, about five miles from WRAMC proper) was given to DC/MD to use as a homeless shelter in the early '90s. I don't know if it's still in use today for that purpose - or what is to become of Forest Glen with the BRACing of WRAMC - but it worked for a long time ... |
