Most recent updates from Hannah Rumping & family, the most recent being first. Thank you for your prayers and thoughts.
~PaulaKevin July 22, 2007 at 12:28 AM EDT WEARY! Please pray for sleep, Please pray for stamina, Please pray for clearness of mind, Please pray for longsuffering, Please pray for recovery, Please pray for sleep! Tom 61 July 18, 2007 at 03:37 PM EDT IT’S A BOY!!! (Day 52) Please join us in praising God for our newest covenant child! On Monday, July 16th, 2007 at 2:52 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, NOAH William Rumping was born, weighing in at 7 pounds .2oz. and 20 inches long. Sorry for the late notification but it’s been a little busy around here. We will fill in the details tomorrow. For now, thank God we made it this far and that Mom, Noah, and the rest of us are doing well. Trusting in our Lord, Tom and Mei Ling 60 July 09, 2007 at 11:37 PM EDT HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION! Busy! That describes our days since our last update. On July 3rd, after our last posting, I (Tom) felt weak, tired, and had a sore throat. Great, sick again! When I stuck out my tongue it looked diseased. It turned out that I had “thrush” a yeast infection usually found only in small infants. Who would have guessed? I told you, I feel like JOB! The blessing was that it wasn’t contagious. It took me until yesterday the 8th to feel completely back to normal (Sarah’s birthday). On the “Fourth of July” Hannah was back in the hospital for platelets. We had hoped to let her sit in the car and watch the big fireworks display not too far from our house, but “duty called” and we were in the hospital until 10:30 that night. Early the next morning we were back at the hospital for our clinic visit. Mommy had to leave early to go to her doctor appointment to see if the baby had turned, NO LUCK! So we set up a time for today (Monday the 9th) to try and manipulate (turn) the baby. Saturday, when the Home Healthcare nurse arrived, we couldn’t draw blood from Hannah’s central line again. So Hannah had to get another finger stick. Her fingers are starting to look like pin cushions because her central line continues to have problems drawing blood. Sunday, the Sabbath, was our beloved eldest, Sarah’s, birthday. We enjoyed the day, worshipping God and being at home together. Sarah has been struggling emotionally lately. I am thankful that God has blessed us to be home at during this time so I can be there to talk to her and help her with her struggles. Early last week Sarah and I spent the day talking while biking on a 16 mile nature trail we have by our house. We stopped in a little town half way and had dinner and then returned. It was a great opportunity to get deep into those things that are ailing her while showing her how much she is loved even when she feels neglected. As scheduled, this morning we took Hannah to the Day Hospital for her check up and to receive scheduled medication, blood, and platelets. We are thankful that she is tolerating her medications well so far, but we may have to switch her to a different medication to help fight off her virus (cytomegalovirus (CMV)) since it is not going away as we would like it too. Thankfully, Hannah doesn’t seem to demonstrate any outward symptoms of illness or virus, but we do need to get rid of the CMV and need to pray that the medication works quickly. The other medications available to treat CMV may be more effective, but they are also potentially more toxic to her system (i.e. kidneys, liver, etc.), so we hope to avoid switching medications if possible. Also, we had to leave Hannah at the hospital with our dear friend, Lorrie, while Mei Ling and I went to see if the doctor could turn our newest little Rumping. As part of the process, they hooked Mei Ling up to a fetal monitor prior to starting the procedure. While waiting for the doctor, we could hear the baby thrashing and moving about. Not to mention, I got to hear Mei Ling complaining about being really uncomfortable. By the time the doctor arrived and took a look with the ultrasound machine, the baby had turned! Typical child! It didn’t decide to cooperate until threatened with the “consequences.” Regardless of how he/she turned, we are thankful for another answered prayer and just continue to pray that the baby will now STAY “headed in the right direction” now and always. All in all, we are all well and we are blessed with having my mom here to take the “edge off” of our daily stress. If all continues to go as planned, we will induce Mei Ling on Monday the 16th and have a new covenantal child to bring up in the training and admonition of the Lord (Eph. 6: 4; Deut. 6: 4-9; Prov. 22:6). Thank you all for continuing to pray for us. We pray that you continue to trust in our Lord for your every need, as we have had to. Tom and Mei Ling |

AN AVERAGE DAY! (Part 1 of 2) AM As the darkness gives way to the light of day our journey begins! Hannah’s feeding tube alarm sounds, good morning, it’s six o’clock. Turn off the pump and flush the line. Change Hannah’s diaper while she is asleep. Mommy is up to feed baby – again! Quickly to the bathroom to brush teeth to the kill the germs, splash water on my face to wake up from our 4 hours of sleep! Throw some clothes on and survey what needs to be done. Caleb, my early riser, is up for breakfast – eggs and toast please. Hannah calls for daddy to pick her up and carry her downstairs. Noah arrives in his bouncy seat after a feeding and a diaper change. Mommy goes back up stairs to use the breast pump. Caleb is finished with his breakfast, asks if I would play with him, I can’t. Hannah’s low bacteria breakfast is served. The phone rings, it’s home health care; the nurse is on her way to draw Hannah’s blood for labs. Clear and clean a spot on the table for a.m. medication preparations. Hannah asks for help eating, she is also cold – fetch a blanket. Its eight o’clock, call the doctor to make the appointments. Mommy and Noah to pediatrician for jaundice and lactation consulting, Daddy’s throat is still bad – need to get him better. The door bell rings, the home health care nurse is here; make a spot on the table for her. Sarah is down for breakfast. While serving Sarah breakfast orally answer the nurse’s 50+ question questionnaire. Sarah goes to pick up the table; thank God Sarah is now engaged in the battle. Noah begins to cry, Sarah is re-tasked to Noah. Mommy joins the fray and supplements Noah with feeds. Sarah and Caleb begin their morning chores. Hannah’s central line won’t give up any blood so we resort to sticking her finger; her tears are taken by her father as he stops to put them in his heart. The phone rings, its home healthcare reminding us about our appointment for tomorrow – it seems like weeks away. Labs are drawn on Hannah; the nurse is on her way to the hospital to see if Hannah will need blood and/or platelets today or to see if the CMV virus is subsiding. Morning oral meds are late, we are behind! Thirty minutes later, nine oral meds are given. Now we must start on the IV medication; procedure binder out, protective gown and gloves on, pump and meds check! Fifteen minutes later IV meds are flowing. Time to eat, mommy tries to eat, but Noah is hungry again. She must try and feed him every two hours because of the jaundice. Mommy feeds Noah and is off with him to their 10:30 appointment at the pediatrician. Send Sarah to clean the bathrooms, Caleb to collect the trash. Hannah wants to watch a movie. She complains that her legs hurt and she doesn’t want to walk over to the sofa. She needs to walk. Her legs hurt due to inactivity, but I don’t have the time to work with her so with one swoop of my arm on the sofa she goes. I shower for my doctor’s appointment at noon. Caleb is done with his morning chores, asks if I would play with him, I can’t! The floors need mopping, Sarah sweeps and I mop. It’s noon. 63 July 23, 2007 at 12:40 AM EDT AN AVERAGE DAY (Part 2 of 2) NOON Mommy returns and we pass the baton. Grab my errand list on the way out. The doctor gives me another round of medication. I think about what we need to do this afternoon. Run a few errands and to the drug store to have my prescription filled. Get a call from Mei Ling, the hospital called, Hannah must go in for blood! Change to the afternoon plan. Pack up all the stuff in case we have to stay the night. Mei Ling now at home with the kids – good luck my dear! Daddy takes Hannah to the hospital. Mommy and kids swing into cleaning action, vacuuming and dusting that can only be done when Hannah isn’t in the room for at least an hour afterwards. Hannah’s port is de-accessed and then re-accessed; blood is draw to test if it’s hers or her donors. After a lot of confusion, five plus hours later we are finished. PM Dinner is heated in the stove. The new microwave doesn’t work. With a discouraged look on his face and sure of the disappointing answer to come, Caleb asks for a last time if his father can give him some time and play with him – I knew what I had to do! We super glued a toy of his and played WWI fighter pilots. We read about the planes they flew and the Red Baron. This with a hug and a kiss and he was recharged. Sarah wanted to talk so we closed the door to the den and discussed those things important to a mature eleven year old. She is getting too big to sit on my lap and it is breaking my heart. I am afraid I will miss what little opportunity I have left to enjoy her as a little girl before this is all over. I will miss my first born the day she is given away in marriage. The kids set the table and get the drinks. Mei Ling feeds Noah and I feed the rest. Sarah cleans up, Mommy eats, and I prepare the nine o’clock medications. The seven medications are drawn and given. The evening IV is started. Mommy goes to sterilize the breast pump bottles. Nightly bible study and off to wash up for bed. Hannah and her IV pump are carried up stairs by an entourage of followers. Clothes, sweat and dirt are exchanged for pajamas, diapers and wash cloths. Hannah’s IV is finished. The family prays and Mei Ling excuses herself to feed Noah. Kisses and hugs are exchanged. Caleb goes for bedside water cups. Hannah asks for a book to be read to her. Sarah to the rescue! Daddy is off to get Hannah’s nightly feeds started. Calculations are made for the right dose and rate. Feeds are given. Things are starting to wind down. Then it got interesting! Hannah complained of her head hurting and feeling sick to her stomach. A call to the Hospital HEMONC doctor on call, its midnight! It’s a probable side effect of the drugs given earlier at the hospital; we will be on watch tonight for a fever. Mommy to bed for a “cat nap” until Noah’s next feeding. Making my rounds, doors locked, lights out, Sarah and Caleb are sound asleep. One o’clock a.m. daddy rocks Noah to try and comfort him but the crying continues; Mei Ling in to relieve daddy at 2:30 a.m. Daddy struggles to his knees to thank God for another blessed day. We have our daughter Hannah another day with us, our family is together, and I have been given another chance to serve them and my God. I collapse next to Hannah in our bed. She raps her little puffy arm around me and whispers, “I yov you daeee” Making it all worth it. Mommy arrives at 3:30 with Noah. In bed they plop. And at six, it starts all over again. May the Lord Bless you as he has us, Tom and Mei Ling |

PRAYERS NEEDED - NOW!
From Marine Tom: KEEP PRAYING! For the first time since Hannah came home in June, events are spiraling in the wrong direction. We need your fervent prayers. Please share our need for prayer with everyone you know. Hannah, as I share this prayer request, is going through yet another procedure tonight in a long series of steps to get her health under control. As Mei Ling mentioned last time, the doctors have decided to run some additional tests. She is currently being “stuck” to get a blood sample to ensure her blood will clot after her endoscopy tissue samples are taken. The endoscopy is one of two procedures Hannah will undergo tomorrow in an effort to find out what is causing her health to deteriorate. As mommy explained to her tonight what they were going to have to do, Hannah cried, put her arm on the pillow for the IV to draw her blood, and didn’t even flinch! The nurses were amazed! They don’t often see such a brave and trusting little soul especially in one so young. Not long after the IV stick, Hannah vomited (again) and then just kept going. The good news today was that the CT scan did not show any problems with Hannah’s abdomen. However, there is disturbing news as well. Sadly, we were told that Hannah has fluid around her heart. This news is not good! They are not sure what has caused it but it will have to be addressed, and addressed quickly. It could have been caused by the CMV virus, Graft vs. Host disease, or who knows what. Tomorrow morning they will take a closer look at Hannah’s heart. PRAY that it isn’t bad news. PRAY that they can find the cause of the fluid and help it to go away or remove it from her little heart. Through it all Hannah continues to show us what it means to trust and have faith. Hannah continues to reach the hearts and minds of others - as salt and light - as God continues to use her in a mighty way. May I never again complain about any hardship I ever go through! I HAVE NO RIGHT! My heart is aching for my little hero; I pray I could do something…anything to take her place. I don’t know what else to say…to do…to think. It is obvious that God’s hand is upon HIS little girl. I am truly a humbled and broken man… Tom |

Thank you for the encouraging words, prayers and "bumps" to keep this thread "up there"! ~PaulaKevin
Today: QUICK UPDATE Hannah had an echocardiogram this morning to look at her heart and I am proud again to say that she did great. We are also happy to report that the echo showed that the fluid around her heart was not as bad as it was on the CT scan, and it appears that her heart function is not currently being effected by the fluid – Praise God! This means that she will still be able to have her endoscopy this afternoon (4pm EST) and we don’t need to do anything immediate to address the fluid around the heart. The fluid may go away on it’s own, or if we determine from the endoscopy that she has GVH, treating the GVH may help to resolve the heart issue and other possible related problems. Of course this doesn’t mean we can forget about the fluid. The cardiology team will want to continue monitoring her closely, and will probably schedule her for follow up echocardiograms routinely until we are sure the fluid issue is resolved completely. As always, thanks for your prayers. Keep it up, it works! With a grateful heart, Mei Ling |

EMERGENCY SITUATION Walking near “the shadow of the valley” once again! Your prayers are desperately needed. As we write you this early morning Hannah is in the ICU at Children’s Hospital with an unknown, but serious, problem. We rushed to the Emergency Room around 5:30 yesterday afternoon after she continued to vomit non-stop for over an hour. Presently they are unsure what caused the vomiting and high heart rate. Hannah continued to vomit for over three hours until the medicine they gave her to stop the vomiting kicked in. What a strong little girl. Hannah started to shut things out as she began to focus on the task of fighting off this latest round of sickness. Her white blood counts are very high which indicates that she is probably starting to battle what may be a bad bacterial infection, virus, or worse. They have started her on lots of fluids and antibiotics. They are also running lots of tests on her blood, stool, urine, etc. We need to stop whatever it is before it becomes uncontrollable in her body. Without the ability to fight off infections/bacteria/fungus/etc., she is dependent on the medications to help. So, pray they work and work fast! In the past 6 days that we have been home, Hannah has felt and acted great. She has enjoyed playing with Sarah and Caleb, even climbing up the stairs to go play with them upstairs! She has also been eating and drinking a little without throwing up – until today – I mean yesterday (since it’s 2 AM!). Our day started as normal and Hannah seemed to feel well. She was asking all day to go on a walk with Daddy, so at about 2:30 PM she got to go for her walk around the block. By about 2:50, Hannah coughed a couple of times and the vomiting began while still out on her walk. Once at home, Hannah continued to throw up. After 45 minutes of almost non-stop vomiting, we knew something wasn’t right and called the BMT doctor on call. She told us to come in to the emergency room. It was hard even getting to the hospital since Hannah couldn’t stop vomiting. Mommy even had to kneel next to Hannah’s seat in the back with the “throw up bowl” while Daddy raced to the hospital with the hazard lights on. Please pray for healing. Pray that this illness is not life threatening and that it will go away and go away quickly! We will try to update again soon… Please Lord, Heal Hannah! Tom and Mei Ling |
