Give of yourselves if you can...if not spread the word... "Standing by the crib of one's own baby, with that world - old pang of compassion and protectiveness toward this so little creature that has all its course to run, the heart flies back in yearning and gratitude to those who felt just so toward one's self. Then for the first time one understands the homely succession of sacrifices and pains by which life is transmitted and fostered down the stumbling generations of men." Christopher Morley (1890 - 1957) |

As promised, here's an update on little 2-year-old Hannah Rumping diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia (near haploid); she is in Cincinnati Children's Hospital. This sweet little girl will TODAY undergo another bone marrow aspirate and spinal, along with another round of chemo.
Her mother, Mei Ling, writes: "March 06, 2007 at 02:14 PM EST It has been exactly one month since we arrived at Children’s Hospital and found out that Hannah has leukemia. Since then we have been overwhelmed with information, treatments, a 6-day stay in the ICU, and last, but not least, love and prayers from all of you and God’s continual reminder that He is in control and has all of us in His care. Hannah is currently doing much better. Today she is resting, but alert. She has a sinus infection and therefore, complains a bit about her head hurting behind her eyes, but not nearly as much as I would be complaining if it were me! I have learned that nothing is too small to mention to the doctors. The other night she was rubbing her hands and arms and said that it hurt. I didn’t see any visible sign of injury, or source of pain, so I thought it’s probably nothing. Since she continued to moan and complain, I mentioned it only to find out that it is a side effect of one of her chemo drugs! The same happened with her rubbing her eye. I mentioned it and before I knew it we were having a CT scan of her head (which revealed the sinus infection) and an ophthalmologist looking at her eyes! Thankfully, the ophthalmologist didn’t find anything wrong with her eyes. Thursday (3/8), Hannah will have another bone marrow aspirate and spinal, along with another round of chemo. Please pray that her sinus infection (and any other possible infections or fungus’) clears up. Please also pray that her bone marrow results will show her in remission or getting close to it. We expect to have two more weeks of treatment then we MAY get a break before we continue on to our next phase of treatment." PLEASE PRAY FOR HER! PLEASE READ ROBRODGRIGUEZ's instructions posted on March 6 on getting tested to be a bone marrow donor. Hannah specifically needs an Asian/minority component in a donor. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please keep posting to keep this thread "up" on the readability list! HANNAH NEEDS A BONE MARROW DONOR! |

NEWEST UPDATE ON HANNAH FROM HER PARENTS:
March 08, 2007 Wednesday (3/7) was a mixed day. As expected, additional skirmishes will occur in our effort to keep Hannah free from infection. Hannah got a little sick so they added some things and took some things away. After a long late-morning nap Hannah perked up to her happy playful self for a while and then got tired. After a long afternoon nap with daddy, she woke up, this time, lethargic and got sick again. Hannah’s blood pressure then started dropping, and we all know what that can bring from last weeks experience in the ICU. As a precaution, they have already alerted the ICU team! As of the writing of this update (11:30 pm) she has started feeling better. Hannah got more platelets and fluids and her blood pressure then came up. They will continue to watch her very closely. This morning (3/8) her blood pressure is low again. The doctors are concerned that this episode might be related to the sinus infection Hannah is experiencing. So, along with the bone marrow aspirate and the lumbar puncture (spinal tap) we are scheduled for today, Hannah will also be operated on. The Ear-Nose-and-Throat specialist (ENT) will go into Hannah’s right sinus to see what is going on in there and take cultures of the infectious cells. They want to see what it is so they can direct their treatment accordingly. As the medical staff shared with me, the sinus is too close to the brain to hesitate or delay in treating the sinus infection. Prayer Requests for today: 1. Pray that the sinus infection is not bad and that they can identify what it is and directly treat it so it will go away. 2. Pray that Hannah’s blood pressure will come up and stay up. 3. Pray that the lumbar puncture (spinal tap) of chemo will go well and that no leukemia cell will be found in there. 4. Pray that the bone marrow aspirate will reveal that the chemo is working by continuing to bring Hannah’s Leukemia (Blast) cell count down. WE NEED to see a drop! We need the Blast cells to drop below 5% of her total cell count over the upcoming weeks before they can do a bone marrow transplant. |

I can't medically help, due to old medical issues, but, what else can we do in addition to financial and spiritual assistance? I think of my girls when I read this, and gid has blessed me and they are healthy.

Your lack of planning does not constitute a crisis on my behalf. |
My daughter had several good Asian friends at a Air Force military school in Va. she attended during high school. I know a few of them have kept in contact via "myspace". She is currently in BCT with no access to her myspace account but I will see if I can somehow get this information to them. The school was Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal, Va. There were many, many Asian students there. You may want to try and contact the academy to see if they will get this word out for you. It may be a long shot but worth a try. God Bless and you are in my prayers.

HANNAH NEEDS A DONOR! BUT, IN THE MEANTIME THERE IS ENCOURAGING NEWS!!!!
March 11 update from Marine Tom and Mei Ling Rumping on their two-year-old Hannah currently in Cincinnati Children's with a rare form of leukemia! "... 1. The sinus infection appears not to be a major threat. We are still awaiting the culture results but there was no sign of major infection or damage and she is feeling better and not complaining about her nose/head hurting anymore. 2. Hannah’s blood pressure has stabilized. It appears she needed more fluids. She still isn’t eating or drinking much. 3. The lumbar puncture (spinal tap) of chemo went well and no leukemia cells were found in there. 4. Not only did the bone marrow aspirate reveal that the chemo is working by continuing to bring Hannah’s Leukemia (Blast) cell count down, but the blast cells dropped below 5% of her total cell count this past week so Hannah is in what they call in “remission”. Thank You Lord! This was the first major battle we had to win in our campaign against this form of Leukemia. Now, we need to keep it under 5% so we can have a chance to do a bone marrow transplant in June. ... With great thanks to all of you for your messages of encouragement and assistance in our time of need. God be with you, Tom and Mei Ling" |

THE CENTER OF GRAVITY OF THIS WHOLE SITUATION As a military strategist and analyst I spend a lot of time teaching and studying the operational art of warfare and tend to look at things systemically through a focused lens. I am constantly searching for the centers of gravity of a situation – the critical points where victory lies - along with their strengths and weaknesses. As you all are praying for us from around the globe, I thought it best to share with you the “big picture” as we understand it. PRAY: First, we must pray that Hannah’s body will go into complete remission. The chemo-therapy over these next three months is designed to bring and keep her leukemia cells (Blast cells) below 5% of her total cell count and allow Hannah’s normal white cells to grow out of her bone marrow. If we can’t achieve this, we may never get to the bone marrow transplant…because the transplant wouldn’t work. Hannah has made it through the first part of this major hurdle. Her Leukemia cells are less than 5% of the total cells. Thank you Jesus! Now the Leukemia cells have to remain less than 5% and the normal cells must begin to reproduce: no increase in good cells - no transplant. No transplant and she’s not likely to be cured from the Leukemia. Second, we must pray that Hannah will stay healthy enough to continue chemo-therapy without interruption. Hannah’s type of leukemia is hard to eradicate and requires a maximum effort up front to try to bring the blast cell count to below 5% of her total cell count and keep it there. Any interruption due to infection, at minimum, is a set back and allows the blast cells a chance to recover and adapt to our treatment strategy; and of course could be deadly. Third, we must pray that we find a donor that will closely match Hannah’s HLA typing. Without the donor there can be no transplant, without the transplant, as we noted above, there is little chance for a cure. Fourth, we must pray that the transplant tentatively scheduled for sometime in June will take place without too many complications. The first fourteen to twenty-one days after the new bone marrow is introduced is the most critical time. Everyone’s beloved Hannah will be at her weakest and therefore, her most vulnerable. As the battle takes place in her body between the near lethal doses of chemo and radiation she will be given, the leukemia, and the transplanted bone marrow, she must over come them all and their related potential negative side effects. Your constant prayers regarding these four major objectives are much appreciated. There will be many little skirmishes a long the way in which we will need prayer for, but these four as we know them, are the critical focus of our efforts. Please don’t forget God’s little girl in the months ahead as she continues to bring us all closer together and us closer to Him. For uniting us is one of the blessings that is intended to come from such a tribulation. God be with you all, Tom |
