I want to join the Army, but I'm 10 years older than the Army allows for enlistment. But I easily pass for a lot younger. If I could pull it off, does anybody know what they can do to me if I get caught lieing to the Army recuiter? Or if they figure it out after I'm in?

This isn't 1942, you aren't going to be able to lie about your age, especially at YOUR age. Every do***ent from your driver's liscence on up will give you away. God forbid you need a security clearance...

There are waivers for age, but the Army recruiter will have the most current info.

You shouldn't lie to them in the first place, as stated above.

I know, I've got my head up my ****. I'd never get away with it. I just want to serve. I want to make something of myself. Do you think that with a waiver, a guy could become a real soldier? That sounds dumb, but I want to be really proud and useful to my country, not just dress-up.

You would have to petition the president, as others have done. That's the only way if you are too old by their standards. Believe me, I know, I have tried.........if you have a medical degree, or language skills, you may have a chance.....

Try volunteering for some organization that supports the military, veterans, or wounded vets. That's a great way to serve our country and support the military.

Check with the Army National Guard. There policies change often and you may luck out.

My friend here is right. Consequences of a fraudulant enlistment are ugly.

Thanks for the good advice everybody. I know the whole idea must have sounded stupid. I don't know what I was thinking. And thanks for not saying the obvious outload: That I'm an old fool. Good intentions, but an old fool just the same.

nothing wrong with wanting to serve, but as stated previously there are many ways to do so and lying to get in will do you more harm than good. i see that you are a Marine's dad, nothing is more important to a servicemember than the support of those back home, keep that in mind and you'll see the benefits. if your attempts to join any branch are denied, please look into the many veteran's groups that are out there, they can always use well meaning help. good luck and keep us informed, please. Smile

One last post from an olde foole.

Irrelevant to this topic, but I’m not starting a new one for this. I've decided to cancel my account. Nothing personal. You run a fine site and I've enjoyed it. My kids don't appreciate the support or understand why and that I'm interested in their military lives. They question why I even want to be a member of Military.com. So I'm bugging out. That might help to explain my foolish desire and ill-conceived plan to enlist.

It's good to see a dad wanting to enlist. Good luck.

You guys forgot to mention the Civilian Corps of the U.S. Army. No max age limit there and your serving alongside soldiers in uniform.

Same deal as a contractor with a private company working on a Army contract.

They are short of people in both areas because of retirements.

Me and my Son SPC John Duke who have served a 15 month tour in Iraq and is now return back home safe and sound.

I salute you for wanting to serve your country but at this time the rules say not over 42 (I think!). I am 55 years old and still in the Army National Guard. But old age, a minor heart operation and high blood pressure have kept me out of many deployments. I have a 50/50 chance of being deployed this time but not in Iraq. Due to OPSEC I cannot tell you where I might go. You have to realize that you have to be in tip top shape in order to be in the service. The great hardship and stress that will be put on you physically and mentally will be very, very great! Right now my full time job is with Computer Science Corp. which is contracted out to the military. I am with a section called "Close Combat Tactical Trainer". CCTT is a vehicle computer simulator that simulates the function of a military vehicle. Where I work we simulate a M2A2 Bradley IFV which is a Armor vehicle thats carries soldiers to the battle. We can simulate a war time environment in which the Bradley crew can practice their Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)! In a simulated environment they will be confronted by many enemy vehicles and soldiers and there they will learn there strength and weakness. This is a great job and I like it very much! Since I am now getting too old to fight or training physically I can still train soldiers in a Simulated environment! You can do the same by going on websites the Feds set up. Just 'google it" and you will find something that you might like! Good luck and I hope you will find something that will help in some way to train our soldiers to survive out in the battlefield!

USMC_dad, dont give up. there many ways to serve just like they said above. civilian corps, veteran support groups and much more. just need to still be physically and emotionally healthy.
My grandpa made SWAT at 61 years old and is oldest guy in USA to do so. He is my hero even more than my dad. Your kids should be happy you support them like that. My dad very supportive and helpful in my service which makes me try harder.
