They also called it the "skimmer" but the XF5U-1 "flying flapjack" never flew!

You can find more here. I was in the 2nd Avn Co 2nd Inf Div in the early 60's at Benning. We got the Mohawks. Went to the 11th Air Assault Div in 62 still at Benning. I was an instructor at Eustis on both the Mohawk and the ejection seat. Got a lot of hours in one. Great airplane. The Air Force and Marines didn't like em in Nam cause they could sneak up on Charlie without him hearing them coming. Charlie caleed em "silent death". Saw them armed with everything from mini-guns to 500 lb bombs to napalm when we tested them at Benning. Awesome bird.

It appears the 797 blended wing superjumbo is a hoax.

If there is a Boeing 797 it is a replacement for the 737 and not a super jumbo 1000 passanger plane.

That is correct. It is a late 50's design.
The OV-1 was built as a joint US Army and Marine Corps project for a modern battlefield surveillance aircraft. The Marine Corps pulled out of the project before their prototype could be built, but the US Army began placing its orders late in 1959 for the OV-1A and OV-1B. The -1A and -1B differed in that the -1B variant had an 18 foot side-looking radar mounted under the fuselage and offset to the right. The OV-1B also had an internal camera with in-flight processor and an increased wingspan to cope with the extra equipment. While the plane was slow, its huge triple finned tail and engines mounted on top of the wings gave the Mohawk great maneuverability. To protect against small arms fire from the battlefields over which it kept a watchful eye, the cockpit was armored with an aluminum-alloy floor, flak curtains and bullet-resistant windows.

The Marines went with the OV-10.

I just saw a commercial for Boeing on the Travel Channel and they showed an image of the blended wing design exactly like the picture above only it was all silver and had a grid behind it rather than a city scene. So either Boeing is jumping on the hoax bandwagon to confuse Airbus, or they have decided to spill the beans. I checked out their website and could not find anything specific, but I did find where they are researching the concept and posted the linke below.

http://www.boeing.com/ids/news/mdc/97-158.html

Here is a rather large (5.18 mb) adobe file that shows the blended wing concept aircraft on page 3 of the document.

797 is not really a “hoax”; more of a concept A/C. It was in Popular Science couple of years ago.

Is this the one that they said could take off from earth and make it to the outer Ionosphere or even space.

They need to find a more economical, aerodynamic(space), and precise/accurate way to make it from earth to space. Maybe once in space we can have a little peice and quite to develope more technology.
