An older pic of the only remaining XB-70 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton. The aircraft is on display inside the museum now. One BIG, beautiful bird!

The XB-70 was a hot bird. I will agree it sure does look strange, but it could get up and move.

Yeah, it's one helluva big-azzed bird...185 feet long, over 30 feet in heighth, and a wing area of nearly 6300 feet. It dwarfs everything else at the museum, except for the B-36 and B-52. Here's another pic of it in flight, with the outer wing sections lowered to their full 65 degree angle for supersonic flight up to Mach 3+. USNVet940,
The XB-70 is awesome. In flight it is really streamlined. Looks like a monster on the ground. Looks like a gracious bird in flight. Goes Mach 3? Wow! Getting to love this bird. Doktorbob |

Here is a new prototype design Lockheed Martin is building right now. The aircraft is called the Cormorant. It is a submarine launched unmanned warplane that can be launched underwater, take off into the air, and then go back into the water for retrieval. LM always has the neatest toys!

Looks like a dragonfly, but they call it a Mohawk (OV-1). First Turboprop I ever rode in.

Yeah, I absolutely love it. It's one of my favorite aircraft at the museum. The first prototype of it (which is the one at the museum) only reached Mach 3 one time because of aerodynamic and systems problems that seemed to plague every flight. The second prototype (which suffered it's share of problems) however, flew a number of times past Mach 3, including a sustained 33 minute run. Unfortunately, it was lost in 1966 when an F-104 chase plane collided with it over California, killing the pilot of the F-104 and one of the two pilots in the XB-70. Here's a couple of good sites about the XB-70 program and a link to it at the museum. http://www.labiker.org/xb70.html http://www.unrealaircraft.com/classics/xb70.php http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=592 "I've a good mind to join a club and beat you over the head with it."--Groucho Marx |

I'll bet thats a kick in the azz. What were they doing with that? Taking off a STOL style runways with mountains all around? I Would bet that aircraft could almost go straight up with full power on this array. AWESOME, Doc... |

This is another one we should be glad didn't get into large scale production. It looks to have a low RCS (stealthy) and the basic design would have been a great interdictor (like the A-6) if it had better engines. It's called the Horten HO-229

The "Cormorant" is a very well thought out craft. To be retrieved, I assume it may be used again. Excellent. Doktorbob
